Has anyone ever built an off-road trike like this??

I was talking with a 2 wheeled rider buddy of mine..yes there are a couple of nice ones out there!!

Anyway he and I were talking about the three wheeler riding characteristics and we got to how it may handle if the 3 wheel configuration was reversed..

Single wheel on rear trailing arm and 2 wheels in front..

    Like so..

Seems a fairly easy fab compared to some I've seen, at least in my mind. Maybe start with a 400EX or something similar, then remove the rear trailing arm and find something similar to fit with minor fabrication. Some fancy plastic work and you're the rage of the trails.

Has anyone ever built one? How does it(or might it) handle in an off-road environment?

Guys have done some crazy crap, someone must have tried this before?

It would be like putting a 3 wheeler to 2 wheeler conversion on a 4 wheeler...

I think that it would work; but as far as practicality off-road, not so much. It would be more stable than a standard trike, but unless you start with a 4x4 (hey a 3x3 would be sweet...), you've gone from two drive wheels to one. I would imagine something like this would get stuck alot.

In the 80's I remember eithe Dirtwheels or 3&4 Wheel action doing a test between a trike, a quad and a Yamaha Big Wheel with an Astro (or something similer) kit on it. It seems like the front end would be very heavy if it ever left the ground... And without some type of swaybar I think it would tend to toss you in the turns. I dont think it couldnt be made to work, but I do think it would be a whole new animal to ride, with different charachteristics than either trikes or quads.

it dont work as soon as you hit mud or sand the rear wheel spins like crazy same with hills your pushing to much weight with wheel theres a guy here in cranbrook who puy atv tyres on his canam the worst problem is it dont have enuogh steering angle to counter steer in a drift on dirt because the rear wheel spins so much so it will spin out in any high speed corner it was a great idea for the road but it shoud stay on the road

I would guess you would have problems pushing the heavy front around with a single rear tire. Climbing over trees would prove difficult and I think it would get stuck alot. Frontwheel drive maybe? or 3wheel drive would almost be a must.

Haha, I think it would be awesome, maybe not ideal or practical for every type of terrain, cool none the less.
I remember reading a post not so long ago about how haneous the old astro kits were and what a terrible thing 2 do 2 a trike, then someone suggests just adding a missile swinger and make it a trike again, that ideal has been stuck n the back of my brain ever since. Build it!

I don't know what a missle kit is..but I like the sound of it!!

Really, no one has ever done this..I figured there would be at least a few pics by now!!

The 3X3 idea would be crazy, but the fab work would be crazier still..

I wish I had the skills..I'd try it!

I bet some one around here has the magazine article that they put the missile kit on a trx instead of an atc, but like was state doesnt work out so good. Have a lack of traction and very bad weight balance ratio.

There was an old one they built in the late 80's that DirtWheels built Like Rodd said above. It was a BW200 with an Astro quad front on it, and I'm pretty sure they said it handled like poo and shelved the idea.
    Rides:
1986 ATC250R (sectional pipe and Klemm Research silencer)
1986 ATC250R (Desert Bike, WAX-ON seat, Dual Cibie lights, Steering Stabilizer)
1979 ATC110 (Bandito frame and forks, Turbo wheels, disc braked)
    1982 ATC70 (Lifan manual 125)
    1987 LT80 (piped, widened)

I think this would work great. Just because the magazine people said it was gay dosent mean they are. people thing trikes are gay and here we all are. I am currently trying to build a reverse Tecate with a Tecate 4 motor.
