looking at a new truck

its a 2003 F-350 4 door short box, black, 6.0 powerstroke, 102,000 miles. new tires and a 4 inch lift. neighbor bought it in 07 with 85 and it rolled over 100k this spring. hes selling it cause he bought it to pull a 2 horse trailer and he just doesnt use it anymore. he has 4 vehicals for 2 drivers. its so clean, and the last owner was a mechanic in the coast guard before the moved to hawaii, so he says. he wants 12k for it. i know the 6.0's had head gasket problems but my cousin has and identical truck he bought new and pulls a trialer 90% of the time and he has 250k on it with no problems. ill try to attach a pic i have

I would steer clear of it,to many problems with those engines.The newer ones aren't that much better either.You could buy and De-stroke it and be all right.

What do you mean by that?

I wouldn't own one, but if you get it I'd recommend an EGR delete and doing the head gaskets and most importantly the head studs. Then they're OK.

If you're suggesting putting a 5.9 in it, that's a great idea. They make a kit to do that swap. I know a guy who did it. Now that would be cool...

Im surprised that 6.0 isnt blown up.....the 6.4 wasnt any better, but the NEW diesels that Ford is designing in-house have been great, from what ive heard.

Its strange, a friend of mine is also looking at getting a truck similar to this, I was talking to him about it this week.

I'm a Ford guy 100%, and I wouldnt own one of the 6.0/6.4 diesels......Navistar really screwed Ford over on those motors....But the 7.3 was a bulletproof engine, so IDK WTF Navistar was thinking with those 2 motors.

That is what I was talking about.Fixing the head studs and gaskets isn't a cheap deal.I've seen a few low mileage 6.0 give up the ghost.

My dad has a 2004 F-250 powerstroke 6.0L as everybody else calls the the fix liters but we have had zero problems with it but I know the 04 and up 6.0l are a bit better. My dad owns a mechanic shop so if anything ever goes wrong there shouldn't be a problem

yea i want to run the VIN and see if the head gasket was fixed or not under the warrenty. and to the haters of the 6.4's, my dad had a 6.4 with the 6 speed and that was the best running truck. we do silo demolition so we pull the goose neck trailer all over, probably 75% of its 120k miles was with the trailer or full of equipment. the only problem was the milage, 12 to 13 but i swear that thing wuld pull a house. now his new 6.7 is one crazy powerhouse but i still cant get over the that its an auto...

I'll continue to hate. I've heard of too many problems with those engines. Even if you did happen to get a good one, my 7.3 will pull anything that will and use less fuel doing it.

the both have their strong points, the 7.3 are bullet proof but the 6.4's will drag a house

People make kits too fix the head gasket issue. and its not like you pull outta your drive way and BAM your head gasket go boom. My uncle has a fleet of 20 truck ford pickups (15 being a 03 4x4 6.0 f250 like this one and the other 5 being 02 7.3 powerstroke f250 4x4's) and all of these trucks are used as tow trucks EVERY day. My uncle has never ever had a single issue with any of his 6.0's. Good power stock, and pretty good motor life. (250K normal 500K if you do excessive maintenance) If you get this truck and are gonna have a lead foot all the time, yeah your gonna wanna look into sending your heads in to be machined for O rings, and that will solve the issue. Its been done to my uncles whole fleet and they all have tuners, 4 inch straight pipes and upgraded turbo's and they hold up perfectly. I'd say go for it. I personaly like the 6.9's idi international,the 7.3 idi international , along with the 7.3 Power stroke. (Jut because ) . But there is NOTHING wrong with a 6.0 , other than the fact its got some bad reputation for blowing head gaskets under high, excessive usage .

My boss drives a 2004 F-250 6.0. The throttle pedal fell off in the first week. If you put it in low range it gets stuck, sometimes for good.(why do they have hubs still?) The front end has slop in all directions and has some interesting clunking sounds coming from it. The switchgear, shifter and gauges look like they came from a 1988 Taurus. Door panels flop around like they were duct taped from the factory. It has zero low end torque. First to go was the coolant tank, then the heater core, now it all points to head gaskets. It has only 142,000 miles. I could go on about how big a POS this truck is, nothing but problems. We have a 95 7.3 at work that has about 275,000 miles on it. It runs pretty good, burns a bit of oil, trans has been rebuilt twice.(auto) I dont know what Shorty is talking about, but having to pull the heads on an entire fleet to have them O-ringed doesnt sound like "My uncle has never ever had a single issue with any of his 6.0's." to me.

I what i was getting at was that, is that thery're pretty decent trucks stock. I mean they're nothing compared to the newer crap, But who's gonna shell out 75k for a new ford f250? (Not to mention that they're UGLY as a yamaha and and almost as ugly as a kawasaki, and thats coming from a die hard ford guy.) So with a little time and money I was saying that they CAN be really good trucks. I have no clue what this guy above me 2 comments it saying that The WHOLE truck is a pos and stay the hell away from ford.(Must be a dodge guy ). I think he got a truck that was bad from the factory or badly matained , and that happend with quite a few powerstroke 7.3's also out there when they came out in the mid-late 90's(defective heads and such).

So just face it, you got a person that know a heck of alot more about 6.0's....

and glamy, ford didn't accept a bail out (or government loan whatever you wanna call it) nor did they want one. They re-worked the company and got there crap together, and didn't need a freakin loan to keep em afloat unlike the other companys did.

So lets leave this guy's thread alone and stop taking it over with a bunch of nonsense.


I'd like to avoid getting into some hushy crap argument. I don't want to get anyone a infraction or banned nor I.
