86 250r. Any good for just putting around?

Neighbor's got an 86 250R looks to be in pretty good shape.

He's been working at a local honda and other dirtbikes shop for 20 years
so he may know what he's doing.

We're all done going fast and 2/3rd gear on the sx's and reds seems to be enough for us.
They'll accelerate enough to lose a hat for sure so...??

Is this "R" to much machine for us?
    It's under 1,000$

I'm sure there's a list of things to look for but the closest I get to 2 strokes, is the chainsaw.

    Thanks

I am a 2 stroke guy but alot of times I got the kids that wanna ride with dad so its easier to just fire up the 200E and gp for a putt. My oldest boy (almost 6) loves to get on the 2 smoker and hit the power band with Dad but by 2nd gear he gets quiet and 3rd hes ready to go back to first. But for under $1000 I'd get it just to have in the collection for yourself.
    Just sit back and chillaxx

Way too much machine if you enjoy the sx up to 2nd or 3rd. Even though it is under a $1000. However if your curiosity gets the better of you, I don't think you would have a problem selling it and recouping all of your money. Just remember , No hats on the head like you ride your SX. Full helmet only and lean forward or you will be on the ground faster than you can say wtf?

    Gotcha.
So no trailer hitches or racks.
Full dress boogie, full face helmets and boots etc

I see them at the dunes all the time and they sure look like fun and quite capable in the loose sand hill climbs.

Glad to see your weather has decided to stay above freezing.

They were built to go fast. Normally 2-strokes don't like to be lugged around and will load up on you

And No! no trailer hitches or racks on a 250R lol

You can put around on a 250R around all day no problem. Keep an extra plug and wrench in the toolbox just incase.

Once you take a few hits of the powerband you'll be addicted though.

An running, rideable 86 for $1000? You should already have it.

If you are "fine" with 2-3 gears on 4 stroke utility trike, you dont want one of these.
Yeah you can "putt" them around as others are suggesting but it aint the same idea you have. I dont think you want or need one of these, or quite honestly you lack the experience of one to even think about owning it. (Unless you are ready to get into the top tier of performance trikes)
I dont mean that in a bad way either.

Buying this, knowing as little as you do about a "Sport 2 stroke" machine and riding as "relaxed" as you do, would be the same as me buying Water skiing equipment and a boat.Or it would be like selling a Kenworth Semi Truck to a 16 year old with a new licsense.

I dont live near water, I know nothing about skiing, or maintenance of a boat, and we have about 2 months of the year to even use a boat where I live.

And although most are saying that machine is worth 1000$..IMO it is, but it certainly aint some deal of the century that you should feel like you "have" to buy it.
If he wanted 500$ for it, and you had a guy wanting to pay 1200$ for a running 250R the next day, then yeah I would say jump on it and make some money.
But a 1000$ for a sky blue, spray painted 250R, with a bunch of mismatched colors, and aftermarket plastic, to a guy (you) that really has no use or call for it..
It is Not worth it to you IMO.
It would take you over an additional 1000$ to do a "respectable restoration" on it, and you really would not have any room to make any profit after that.
The way it sets, I dont see you being able to resell it for much over 1200$, and parting it out, would bring you about the same, maybe a little more.
Here is where my long useless list of stuff nobody cares about should go...

I agree with jb2 wheels , that for $1000 you should just buy it, but they are horrible at lugging around. However, at least feel the 250R's power once in your life. Riding a 250R should be on everyone's bucket list

BUY IT ! I can already see you grinning with bugs in your teeth ! lol For that price if you decide to buy it you will get a full return when ready to sell it but i think it will change your mind of ever selling it. With that being said Mosh is right tho, you will have white knuckles after hitting it on that bike. I don't wan't to encourage you to ride above your abilty, that's how people get hurt.

Yup- well said Mosh. Besides, up here in Oregon you can find one in near mint condition for just a little more money.

^Oh, they are, at least out of corners

Mosh's advice is incredibly sound. Don't buy it if all you plan on doing is putting around, it's not made for that. One ride might scare the out of you, literally, if you're used to putting around 2-3rd gear on your SX's.
