something is wrong and im running out of ideas

over thanksgiving break i was helping my uncle fix his honda atcs. started with the 200s. he said that he was able to ride it but when he stopped and turned it off the carb would over flow. i took the carb off and cleaned it with an air hose and put it back together. tried to start it up and it was a no go. the gas was spitting out into the air filter box so i was getting gas (choke was on). put the air filter box cap back on and tried to start it still nothing. checked the spark plug and it was wet. hooked the spark plug to the cable and my bro pull started it to see if we had spark. SP worked fine. then we attempted to push start the atc. a few times up and down the driveway and still nothing. near the last try if fired and ran in second around the yard. full throttle sputtering and spitting about 10 miles an hr. then nothing and wouldnt start again after. as for the honda atc 70 i drained the bowl and cleaned the spark plug.cleaned the gas valve where the screen is. took a few pulls to get it started. raced a little then idled down to nice hum. now and then would choke up and idle funny then back to normal. every time i gave it some throttle the rpm would drop and it would slowly die. as soon as i let up it would return to normal idle. almost as if it was not getting gas. FYI the carb on the 200 was rebuilt. also hes in nj so gas down there is junk. we also tried fresh gas in the 70. still no success.

You say you took the carb off and cleaned it with an air hose. That isnt very descriptive. You really need to take your time and pull all the jets out and be very thorough about cleaning all the orfices/passages. It sounds like a stuck float/needle on the 200 and a plugged main on the 70. But these are just over the net guesses- good luck.

X2. Take the carbs apart and clean em. Also if it's spitting out gas and the plug is wet, SHUT THE CHOKE OFF

i would have done so, but time was short. the carb got a new throttle needle and float needle. the float was checked for leaks. im no longer down there. im only trying to get some info for him.

after making sure it was getting gas i no longer used the choke. the spark plug was still wet after drying it and trying to start it WITH THE CHOKE OFF. knowing it was still getting fuel.

Sounds to me like your float is stuck open and literally filling your head and air box with fuel. This could have happened when you used air to "clean" the carb. High pressure is not how you clean a carb. He will need to pull the carb back off and adjust the float height.

And replace the spark plugs... I have never had a successful go at cleaning plugs, or drying them off...

id throw in some cheap rebuild kits off ebay set them to spec and try it then so you know for sure your carb is fresh and working good

thouse kits are almost never nesesary ive never seen a carb that couldnt be cleaned and work like new and ive never had a dirt bike atv or atc newer than 87 or that ran when i got it

It will be 1 of 2 things. 1.) Your float level is off. If the gas is flowing like a river out of the carb the "Needle" is not "Seating" in the seat.

2.) Your needle and seat are wrong for that carb or they are shot and need replaced.

Plugs are cheap, and I have had fouled plugs that still produce spark, but the motor will not run...

Do you fix carb gaskets with rtv silicone?

I'm just guessing but when you cleaned the carb with air I'm sure you gave it a good blast of air in the fuel inlet? If so you more than likely bent the tab on the float lever and it just needs to be bent back so the float is within spec.
