Cleaning inside of electric Starter

I saw in one of the posts that someone got a electric starter working again by taking it apart and cleaning it. I took mine apart, it was completely caked with black dusty stuff. How should I clean this? Carb cleaner? It is off an 85 Big Red.

Ive used carb cleaner on numerous electric motors (car starter motors,RC car motors,dryer motors etc...) and found that its the best way to go,just make sure you oil the bushings/bearings again as the carb cleaner will make them bone dry!It can eat at some plastic materials and make them brittle so be careful around plastic pieces.

Spray with contact cleaner and wipe down carefully!!!
