I really need to do a video up on how I do these springs / recoils. I do it like Ben said above, but I put it right the first time. lol ( Just ribbin ya Ben ). At Trikefest a couple years ago I took a perfectly good pull starter off a machine. I then totally pulled it apart, put it back together all in under 2 minutes. I did this to show a couple people / users & friends that couldn't figure out how to install the springs. Putting the main spring in took less than 30 seconds.

Hmmm, I really need to do a video.

I can do it in a minute or so But I didn't wanna seem like I was gloating, especially for something that seems to be alot of trouble for alot of people. I think timed recoil winding would make a good competition at TF!

That is a competition I would attend but certainly not partake in!

no vise I just have a seat, put the recoil in my lap and get to work. most of the recoils I have done have been for sleds (cats and doo's) It works best to do it im my lap because the way I do it I spin the recoil housing as I do it

Yeah, just broke the cord on my new 70 and have been struggling trying to get it all back together.
Can't seem to find the right amount of tension to pre load the string so it has enough tension to pull the cord in, but not too much that it pulls the end of the spring out of the cover.

    Actually I didn't, yet...
I say yet because I thought I had enough to still be able to get the job done, but 2-3 pulls after getting it back together I snapped the cord again. I will replace it now so the new one probably will be, whack will give me another variable to work with.

^ Be sure to wind the pulley that the rope wraps around 2-3 revolutions before putting the rope through the hole on the recoil case. That will be just the right amount. --- Jon.

to be honest and I hate to say it the only reason I used the gloves was so I didn't get my hands dirty. LMAO I have super thick skin on my hands from being a machinist for the last ten years or so, doesn't mean I won't cut them just that it doesn't phase me as much. That was the third time I wound that spring that night just wanted to make sure I didn't have an epic fail while recording it lol. I do have a nasty habit ow winding the drum about 4-5 times before threading the rope out to the handle, but I do put lots of extra rope in them as well as a couple of my friends have some super monkey arms and seem to think they need to superman the pull start. Also on a side not to help with the wear of the rope put some grease in your hand when you pull the rope all the way out and let it gently slide through the grease back in, I found all of my yami ropes were greased and they seem to hold up really well that way.
