WTF am i doing wrong? GD recoil spring!

Yeah, just broke the cord on my new 70 and have been struggling trying to get it all back together.
Can't seem to find the right amount of tension to pre load the string so it has enough tension to pull the cord in, but not too much that it pulls the end of the spring out of the cover.

If you pull the spring off the end of the retainer then you might have a problem with the spring or retainer. Make sure the end of the spring is bent and catches correctly. Also make sure the retainer lip isn't broke off , bent, ect.

to be honest and I hate to say it the only reason I used the gloves was so I didn't get my hands dirty. LMAO I have super thick skin on my hands from being a machinist for the last ten years or so, doesn't mean I won't cut them just that it doesn't phase me as much. That was the third time I wound that spring that night just wanted to make sure I didn't have an epic fail while recording it lol. I do have a nasty habit ow winding the drum about 4-5 times before threading the rope out to the handle, but I do put lots of extra rope in them as well as a couple of my friends have some super monkey arms and seem to think they need to superman the pull start. Also on a side not to help with the wear of the rope put some grease in your hand when you pull the rope all the way out and let it gently slide through the grease back in, I found all of my yami ropes were greased and they seem to hold up really well that way.

Good vid!!! I wrap the spring in a simular way. I just spin the spring around instead of turning the housing.

I guess I'll have to do three more videos with complete tear down and repair of both styled drummed honda's and of the yamaha 200 and 225 pull starts. First I am going to change my laptop back to win xp so there is no lag and a better picture quality. Been wanting to put xp back on it anyways. I'll have to make a whole new thread just for them so that the noobs can find them give me about a week and I'll have them done and ready

I really liked reading these posts. So many memories... all of them bad. I've purchased 2 new weed-whackers due to bad recoils because spending $100 bucks seemed like a bargain at the time compared to messing with the recoils on the otherwise good condition units. I ended up giving them to a termite exterminator last year (poor SOB). When I redid my tri-moto's (complete with decompression cable feature) it took over four hours, I lost a 1/2 liter of blood and my wife was looking for divorce lawyers in the yellow pages due to my reaction when she interrupted my train of thought around the three hour mark to ask me what I deemed (and still maintain to this date) to be a stupid question at the point I swear I had it all figured out. Even my dogs kept their distance after that. An hour later I walked into the house proud as a peacock with a working recoil in my black and bloodied hands and mosquito bites all over my grease covered face seeking the recognition I deserved for triumphing over the satanic device, but apparently she was still harboring some serious resentment over the verbal beating I’d administered an hour eariler and as usual I’d already forgiven myself and couldn’t understand what she was still so pis*ed about, so I made the mistake of asking her what her problem was… That was a dark day in the Camexican household, one I am reminded of every time I pull that rope and pray it retracts back into the housing…

I stuck some Velcro to the table and a strip on the housing and wound it right up! next time I do it Ill video it.

i just fed it into the housing like the vid... way easier than the previous attempts. (making fancy tools and trying to wrap the spring up from the center using a corded drill:S)
