What to get as a Vintage Trike Hauler?

    Hey yall,

I’ve been kicking around the idea of taking on a winter project of fixing up some sort of time appropriate trike hauler – older camper, pick up, trailer, ect - something you would have seen hauling trikes around back in the day. Anyone have any ideas or pics of something you may have done? Talking to some of the “trike godfathers” around here 4WD Toyota tuck or an old Winnebago brave came up as ideas...? FYI, the winters are not exactly short here in MI, so I have my share of free time.

    Thankx,

    B-H

    Rampside Corvair.
    VW type 2 pickup.
Forward control Ford/Chevy/Dodge van from the 60s.
70s psychedelic shag van with a waterbed, disco ball, and little diamond shaped windows in the sides.

why not go with the 70's van craze? you know 4x4 van with CB, water bed in the back and a mural of scantily clad women fighting a dragon?

EDIT: same idea at the same time?

A rampside Corvair with a couple US90s in the back would be the sh*t. I recently spotted one on CL locally, til then I had no idea that model existed. A great alternative to a split window VW. Call me strange, but I keep looking for a really clean Suby BRAT to throw my T3 in lol.

I'D go with an early El Camino or Rachero, On the Corvairs a Rampside or Corvan with a trailer would be cool. They also made a pickup without a side ramp, very rare!! or a Lakewood wagon!

I second the El Camino. But it seems like to me the big favorite on the 3wheeler nuts in the 80's was the 4x4 mini turcks, Toyotas,Nissans,s-10,Rangers. Just look at a 80's or early 90's 4x4 magizine and see what I'm talking about. Neon green, purple, and pink paint jobs, rollbars and KC lights, put a 3wheeler in the bed and your a total 80's badass! heres a example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7G3by42420

I do know where there is a certain 73 dodge van with a 3 on the tree and a 6 cylinder engine that's in really cherry shape. I've been debating on getting it, since I have a ton of projects already. Install disc brakes in the front (it still has drums all around), go through the brake system, flush all the fluids and install new battery and she should fire right up! Then install a set of deep dish aluminum mags, some fender flares, a side pipe and some of those Pentastar shaped side windows and it should be a trick machine.

In the late 80's and early 90's I always pulled my trikes on a trailer with my early Ford Bronco's. About 10 years ago I got back into Broncos and still have some of the trikes. I should start pulling with them again instead of using the pick up.

I've wanted to do a Type2 Single or Double Cab forever! But the prices went insane on them. Maybe in this crappy economy I can actually get my hands on one now. If I cant, Ive got a couple other ideas...

My original thought would have been the El-Camino, Ranchero, or a Brat, but how about that Rampside? Love it! Never seen one before but instant want. Doubt there's very many in the UK though. Here it would probably be a Brat, or Mazda/Toyota/Datsun 1 ton pickup, maybe a Morris 575 or Leyland Sherpa, or my personal favourite, Tarpan 233 (long story - don't ask!).
Looking at the Rampside on ebay, the pic of the engine looks like an aircooled horizontal opposed like the VW? Yes/no?
