LED Headlight bulbs for an 85R ??

Anyone try an LED bulb for the headlight in their R yet? These are drop-in replacement H4 bulbs.

They are not like HIDs where wiring, battery, and a rectifier are needed.

Searching ebay for "LED H4" will bring up many sellers in HK. Some of the posts mention the LED bulbs ARE bright enough for headlights than the next sentence says its NOT bright enough.

Just wondering if anyone has tried them in an R yet. And if so how do you like um and which ones did you buy.

LED lights require DC voltage. A stator puts out AC voltage. Something I'm missing here?

If you want a bright enough LED headlight, your going to have to make a custom set up.

LEDs, 1 of these is bright enough
    Cree XML-t6
    SSt50
    SSt90

You’ll need heat sinking, and i mean PC heat sinking.
an LED driver to regulator current/voltage. These leds fry over 4volts(3.2 recommended). They also fry with high amps, 3A for XML and SST50, 8a max for sst90.

You’ll need a reflector. I used a lantern flash light from Wal-Mart reflector. deep and wide. It gave an extreme spot with the XML - stomped the stock 45w head light on a Yamaha blaster.

Ive also done the math for all this before. For the same power usage, you can use 3 XML-t6 and 3 drivers. After inefficiencies, you should be somewhere close to 40w of power. You could set them up like so. 1 for flood, 2 for throw. The flood off mine (made to throw) was enough...

I burnt mine up. Built a voltage regulator and batter set up for my yt. Battery i had was dead and voltage shot up past 19v. Fried my set up(i will rebuild some day!)
I just wanna go fast. If your not first, your last!!

Leds will work on an R, but I wouldnt recommend it without a reg/rect and battery. The problem here is that leds are very voltage sensitive. As your idle drops, your voltage will also drop, leds do not dim like an incandescent bulb, they simply go out. The opposite is true with a higher voltage as your rev you engine you will melt the led. Also those bulbs that you posted use smd leds, which work great for small lighting needs, but are not bright enough to actually light a path as a headlight. I have used the same style bulb before as a daytime running lame and they really only glow not so much shine.

R's come with a regulator from the factory to convert the stator's AC output to DC.

no they don't ... its only an ac regulator.. you have to have a rectifier to convert ac to dc.. i have not seen an LED setup yet that was good enough to be a stand alone headlight,,, there are a few out on the market for like real big money that work,, but more than 5 bills!!

no, they come w/ a regulator to keep it under 14v. Its still AC power that comes out of the stator. this is what a reg/rec looks like, it has 4-5 wires on it, 2 yellow wires, black wire, red wire and sometimes a blue wire. when you reg/rec you need a battery and/or capacitor connected to it to smooth out the power. http://www.trailtech.net/7003-RR150.html
