trx 250r... why do they make different cdi's????

Im trying to rebuild an 86 250r. Ive got a family member telling me that i dont need an ac regulator because the cdi has 2 plugs on it. I dissagreed until i was on ebay an saw one with two plugs, one being the two pronged plug for the ac regulator. Does anyone have input, because ive been told not to believe everything that the clymer suggests...

you need the ac regulator if you are gonna use lights. don't know if you know but, alot of people use a cdi from a 88 or 89 r to increase the spark. Its said to be a good completement to motor work. You should see a double plug near the cdi, that is where the regulator plugs in. Atc and trx regulators are differnt, they use differnt plugs. the atc uses two separate connectors and the trx uses a single double connector.

hey thanks, i didnt know that about the older r's. I was troubleshooting earlier today, trying to figure out why it would only spark every once in a while.. I took the cdi off of my 86 atc 250r, used it and tested the coil, its reasonably within ohms limitations and now im wondering about timing and the pulse generator. Any more info would be awesome!!

also the 86 trx and atc cdi's are different also, if you look in the shop manual, there is a schemedic on the last pages it shows all the connections. they are basically the same, but two wires go to a different point. I just got a cr ignition for mine, on sunday a bolt came out and took out the stator and flywheel. cdi's very rarely go bad, I would take the stator off the atc and use that stator. I've had a stator go bad on me, the pickup went bad, I didn't know right away because everything ohnmed out correct. did you look for the stupid stuff, like the ground not connected, wire damaged, does it still have the stock light switch, I've heard they go bad after awhile. I woldn't look at the cdi, stator, then coil, and then check wiring harness.

Man thats good news!! I should have looked a the schematics better. That may be why i get spark irratically. The wire harness and grounds check out good, and my light switch is long gone... no lights, just a kill switch. Thanks for the update..
