Probably an easy shift linkage/stud/spring/broken case boss under either the right or left cover depending on what engine you have.

Just get out your manual, take that cover off and roll the rear tires while trying to shift and watch the parts try to do there job.......

Both my 350X and a few of the SX's I've owned have done weird shifting issues suddenly with simple issues that didn't require case splitting.

    Sometimes it does though.

OK so i might have missed one part of info. I adjusted the clutch right before this happened and when i turned in the screw it didnt gradually get tight it just makes a click sound. then after i parked it when i noticed the "loose shifter" i tried adjusting it agian and thats when it locked up. COULD it possibly be a bad clutch since it was slipping pretty bad when i shifted in to 4th and 5th. and since the adjuster seems not to do anything anymore

Well, the clutch would affect EVERY gear. but it sounds like you went past it's adjustment and the threads were skipping. I forgot my crystal ball at Fabio's house but you may want to read the book and re-set it or yank the cover, maybe something came out when you exceeded the limit??

Why did you adjust the clutch anyhow??

i didnt tighten down hard at all. i just easily screwed it in then it stopped lol. i went according to the manual go till you feel restisance then back 1/4 turn out but there was no resistance just a clink sound. and it just seems to be in 3-5 gears but thats when i get on the throttle. i tried all postitions on the clutch for the shifter to work agian but no luck.

EDIT: SHIZZZZ i just read the manual it says turn counter clock wise to adjust it. then back 1/4 clock wise. I turned it all the way to the right( which is clockwise) then backed out 1/4. could that have wrecked something lol?

Try readjusting it, then if it's still screwed up, yank the cover off. Lay it on the side and save your oil

^ Hey, even the best of us have to do that from time to time

All kidding aside, you went the wrong way and may have made something else slip/snap etc. But, it sounds like you didn't smoke the manual clutch; So go ahead and tear the cover off and order a new gasket. You may need one of those 4 prong tools to get the basket off if needed. You can use a 15/16TH's socket ground down works great (leave 4 prongs) or just buy the tool, it's like 15$ and I bet bikerchick on EBAY has the tool and a Vesrah gasket kit too. I'd buy a whole lower or complete gasket kit to save money in the long run and rub grease all over that gasket; Many times it can be re-used without silicone that way. Grease the cover bolts too to prevent seizure.

Don't hack up the 2 gasket mating surfaces. Take your time with a razor blade or use some gasket remover, be patient.

I bet you didn't screw anything up too bad. Think of all the people that strip crank threads and stuff when they don't use or misread the book.

Clean your oil "filter" rotor an screen while your in there. It's not all a waste of time, just a learning experience. Take a good look and how that mechanism works and it will help you in the future. You'll be fine; Good luck
