    Two different types of power.
Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Macs is right, they have different pros and cons. depends on what youll be ridin (dunes, track, etc.). typically, 4strokes have more torque and 2strokes have more HP/ and sometimes speed. i think in this case, with the CR500 bein a "big bore" 2stroke, itd have more power (but also more maintenance requirements)

I would rather have the CR, even though the KTM should be a better bike considering the age difference and how much better techology came to pass in 16 years. I don't keep up with the cost of bikes like the KTM but I would guess $3000 to $3500 and I see come very nice 500's in the $2000 to $2500 range. If I'm close in price range, I'd buy the CR and spend the difference getting the bikes power and suspention set up for my weight and riding ability (maybe a hydro clutch) and never regret it. I like 2 strokes.

Ktm hands down. On the track you would have to enter an open class with the CR. You might find the 4-stroke's power a little more user friendly then the CR on trail rides.
