What yr is this R? Picked it up! new pics!

May go take a look at this 250R. He says it's an 84. Can you guys verify that it is or isn't just by the pics? I don't have the VIN. Tried comparing it to pics of members rides but still unsure. Painted red motor seems to be trait of 1st gen, shrouded tank 2nd gen? My guess is 81/82 with a later model tank. I see headlight is missing....anything that you can see? He's asking $650 and said he just had it running around the back yard after changing the gas. I no nothing about these models so any help is appreciated!

Right side chain drive is a first gen trait that is hard to disguise with the 200x tank and the early 185/200 fenders

    Looks like an 81

I wouldn't pay anymore than $300. The guy whos selling needs to get a clue. Far from an 84 and not worth $650

Anyone else got opinions on what they think is a "fair" price? I've got the itch and refund time is right around the corner, but I don't want to jump the gun and pay way above market value or get a money pit.

I would agree with the $300 price mark, because that motor was clearly painted well after it left the honda factory because all the rubber bushings in the cylinder, the boost bottle, and the intake would not have been painted by Honda. It is going to need a lot to be "right" and you dont even know what type of shape that motor is in.

def. looks like 81/82 R is the base of the trike. Hard mounted foot pegs are 81-82 and small front disk brake means 82 or an 81 that has been upgraded. $300

Definition of a boost bottle from another site:

    What is a boost bottle?

The boost bottle is a small sealed chamber connected to the manifold of a 2 stroke engine by a small tube. It works with a 2 stroke by when it sucks in gas, then the piston goes up the gas wants to keep going forward but hits the piston. It would then usually go back into your carb making your fuel mixture double rich in the time fractions of a second. With a boost bottle this flow back of gas goes up into the bottle and compresses itself to do inertia, it will then shoot back down into your cylinder. This makes gas go into your cylinder quicker, allowing for a better explostion and quicker stroke.

I assume this is an "add on" and not a stock option? And if so is it aftermarket or something you could get from Honda

Well went and looked at it this evening. Rear disc brakes so we'll say 82 (thanks atc007). Motor painted over, exhaust painted silver, front sliders painted, front exhaust shield missing, headlight missing ( had 2 small bullet style lights mounted on the lower tree with 1 broken) rear fender busted on left side and whole thing painted. Started on 4th or 5th kick didn't want to idle. Maybe from sitting for a while and needs carb cleaned? Did take it for a quick test ride shifted fine. lot different obviously than taking my 250es for a ride. Didn't even make him an offer he said he would only knock $50 off setting at $600. He insisted there are motors just like his on ebay for $1200. Tried to explain the newer models were worth more and their not "all the same and interchangeable" But he wouldn't even let me finish saying that was not a true statement before saying he would just set back out with rest of his toys he don't use if he didn't get what he wanted for it. He didn't "need' to get rid of it. oh well

Don't rush buying anything just cause you feel the need to own a trike, always take your time and look around the last thing you want to do is buy something that needs tons of work it will take all the fun out of owning a trike. Wen I was looking for a trike I saw lots of crap and high prices then when I was about to give up and I found a 1986 Honda atc 250R 8 houses down from me for $300.00 in decent shape so don't give up.
