Pull it out of the frame if you want a nice job. but if you cant, i wouldn't even try to paint the jug ( too much risk of running the paint, or not covering enough)- mask off everything (even the stuff you wouldnt think) because paint gets everywhere. use 320 grit, or a "red" scotch brite pad to scuff the case, (ie. Elminate all shiny), Do not use anything more agressive, or you risk scratching the metal so deep that it will show through your paint. Use some wax and grease remover (available at most parts stores) before you paint (Dont overdo it, it will leave a residue if you use too much) Spray on some engine enamel, or other high- temp tolerant paint, following the manufacture's directions, and let it cure for a few days before you ride it again.
The effort you put into a good prep-job will show, take your time and have fun![]()
Would be good to at least strip the old paint or have it sand blasted. Then a good thorough cleaning with a good degreaser/solvent. Paint with a good high-temp paint....

are the cooler fins a pain?? thats is mainly my only concern
Well, as far as cleaning, painting or both??
I use Tal-Strip Aircraft Coating Remover for stripping paint and it works fast. All you will need is a parts cleaning brush or something similar to brush off the old paint once thew stripper does it's thing.
Just be sure to use as high quality of a heat resistant paint as you can. The cooling fins are the parts that get the hottest so quality paint and good prep work is most crucial there.
