Complete disassembly, clean the parts in a parts-washer, follow up with compressed air, lastly generously oil each part and wrap in newspaper or shop-rags. Then set aside until ready for reassembly.
It's a lot process, but the only way to ensure there is no grit left inside that may destroy you engine. This will also give you a chance to inspect for damage caused my dirt getting in!!!

You might be strong as an ox, but without a cart you are just a big dumb animal.
Can use diesel fuel or kero to flush it out. I agree to pull it all apart to clean and inspect but not much details to how, where or why there is dirt in it.
No I bought the engine with no top end on it but the guy always had It was stored indoors he just never put a rag in the top of the engine to keep it clean
