85R rebuild stock or esr 310 kit

i have an original 85 that is still running and now has a knock. ive always wanted to build it up. as of right now its bone stock. the local motorcycle shop wants to rebuild the tlower and top end and have it ready to go for me. i always wantedto put a pipe and air box eliminator and maybe a carb on it. then i found out about the esr 310 kit. what would you guys do?

ESR build up would be a good choice. They have tons of parts.
I would call and speak to Eddie him self.

My old man just put the 310 kit on his 86r and loves it. I'd suggest doing it depending on what kind of riding you're doing.

They're on sale for cheap right now. I put a 310 topend on my trx about a year and a half ago and have no complaints. That being said, you could also have your stock cylinder ported by a good reputable builder and make as much or more power than a standard out of the box ESR 310.

ESR can port the cylinder for low-end, midrange/topend and all out drag racing (trx5, trx9 and trx11 respectively) for an extra charge for the cylinder kit.

I have an ESR 350 with TRX9 porting and race fuel dome, ESR ATC5 pipe, 38mm Airstryker carb and ESR reedblock and it is NUTZ! Won't beat a 450 off the line (wicked wheelie-happy) but I think I have the upper midrange-topend hp to reel em in.

Not necessarily. The biggest disadvantage a triker has when drag racing quads is keeping the front end planted off the line and up through the first 3 gears. While you are trying to manage that front end they are shooting off the line.

A well built 265 can easily compete with a good 450. A good 265 can outperform a run of the mill 310.

Upgraded carb, reeds, exhaust and a good porting job to match on a stock cylinder will get it done power-wise as well.....

But all the hp in the world is useless if you can't get it to the ground.. I plan to stretch mine 6 inches to give me a better, more manageable holeshot. I'm fairly certain I'll be able to smoke the 450s with that setup.

With my old setup, which was a stock cylinder bored .050, 38mm AS carb, upgraded reedblock, high compression head gasket, and full FMF exhaust they would get me in the first 50' and then once I got 4th, I could usually make up a little ground. But not enough to beat em by the end of 3 or 400'. I might now have the horsepower to reel em in better regardless of the tough time off the line. Time will tell...
