I recently got a pair of hubs for my R because of play on the axle shaft and they fit great for a few weeks but are starting to get a little play in these as well. It has a original axle should I start thinking of replacing it?

I would place a good bet on that. Or you got a worn set of hubs. 85-89 250r rear hubs are the same, 85/86 350x are the same also.
