1982 YT 175 clutch issue and compatibility

So I recently received a non running 175 for free. Did not take long to get it purring away but I soon found out that the clutch would slip hard when ever i tried to give it gas. I searched on the forums and found out about the clutch adjustment and tried that about 10 times tightening it and loosening it but with no success, so I finally decided to pull the clutch out. I found that some of the fiber plates were worn completely down to metal. So I ordered new fibers off ebay. Anways when I took the old plates apart I found two metal plates that were together with no fiber plate between them about halfe way through the pack. In the manual it does not really show this, but I put it back together like that anyway. After getting the new plates in I tested it and they seemed to be working about 80%, still felt like it was slipping a bit but t was on snow so tough to tell. Anyways after about 1.5hrs of riding my new plates are completely shot and no clutch adjustments will work. I havent taken it apart yet but Im wondering if it has anything to do with the two steel plates being together without a fiber plate between? Or if there is another issue?

Also will a clutch basket, plates, springs, entire assemble from a 1983 175 fit in a 1982?
    Thanks

well if the manual doesn't show it that way it probably shouldn't be that way if you have the correct manual for your model/year

I love how people who don't know, speak up. Try doing a search under the 83 yt175 manual. 82 and 83 clutch packs were different, just for that very reason of that extra metal disc. Also, factory yt175 clutch fibers came in different thickness (3 different parts numbers), so you could mix and match to get a certain overall measurement of the clutch pack. If you have access to a 1982 yt175 shop manual supplement, it explains it all. But then again, what do I know? LOL

Those yamaha yt125 and yt175 are goofy machines. Forget all that you know about hondas, or you'll really be scratching your heads. The clutch setup for the 125 was kind of weak, but it was really stressed under a 175. That's why I recommend finding all the bits and going to a manual dirtbike clutch conversion, way better. But people really need to get familiar with their shop manuals or to get a shop manual period.

If you look at the 1983 yt175 parts microfiche, under the clutch section, it's part #20. And if you look again, it's between 2 steel plates, not the clutch fibers. I know, it's crazy, but there it is. And the 1982 parts supplement suggests you get one of these plates and throw it in your clutch basket. But to do it right, you have to use the thinner clutch fibers. So, it's a real blast if you are just tearing a clutch apart and putting it back together and not using a shop manual with a microfiche reference.

Thanks for all the responses. I do have a manual but no microfiche, but since it is a 1982 and I just bought regular plates off eBay not knowing different thicknesses exists, I should just remove that extra plate and make sure the total clutch pack thickness is correct? But I do know that putting the snap ring on to hold the pack in was nice and tight and if we're to remove any plates I don't think the snap ring will be tight

Tell me again how that clutch experience worked out for you? LOL Do whatever you want. If you can get on the internet to come on here, you can get online and find a microfiche. Or maybe you can't. Either way, what you choose to do is up to you. Best of luck.
