tore apart an original first year 185, not the s and...........

i got an old 185 from the original owner ( a dairy farmer who bought it fresh back in the early 80's). anyhow, this bike was just like you would imagine, old, rusty and full of sweet nature material i tore the motor down, and here is where it got strange. i pulled off the recoil and removed the flywheel. then i took the stator off. the bolts are all mixed up in lengths. one long bolt and one short holding the stator and the four bolts holding the flywheel cage on where of different sizes. now the farmer never had taken this bike apart ever. so, i wonder if the japs put this thing together with mismatched bolts. anyone else find strange builds on original bikes? the other funny part of the story is that i never knew there was a 185, before i bought this bike. i thought only 185s and so on

heres the deal: you were told a story. It would not even be possible to be assembled with mismatched bolts from the factory. on an assembly line you are only given the parts/bolts necesary for your station. and normally only one size fastener per station.

he was the original buyer, had the original manual and the original title. if he lied, then he was a darn good poker player. i've opened up a lot of motors and it looked like it had never been touched. why would he lie?

The rope broke in 84,,the dogs and springs a year later,,,rope again 2 or 3 years later.....Just think about what you said. Very rare machine,,but the recoils been off there MANY times.

Are the plastics more of a red-orange color on that 185, and yellow decals on tank? I think the 185 was only made in 80? Then from there out it was the 185s (smaller version compared to the full size 185 of the early year, and the last year 185s in 83 had front suspension) I have seen these from time to time, but they are deffinatly harder to find than the 81-83s.

Is it not possible that he didn't remember, rather than he lied????? I mean this bike is a 1980 model (only year the 185 was non-S model). that is 32 years old, A lot of things happened in my last 32 years of life that I have zero recollection of.

gosh, great responses where should i begin. this thread was meant to see other weird things on trikes, and not to judge the integrity of an old farmer i met an alien once, he wanted to sell me fruit, go figure as for those who seem a little uneducated on atc motors, you can pull off the recoil a million times and never unbolt the stator. how many stators do you replace on these motors? i found the odd bolts in the stator and everywhere else. that stator had parts of abe lincoln's beard on it, it looked that old and crusty take the thread for its main purpose please and have some fun telling your weird trike finds. otherwise keep trikin and yes it was a cool find. 350xjedi enjoy buddy

alright, I got one for you von....a true tail of naivety. When I was 12 I got my first ATV, a 1986 230 quadsport. I grew up in my dad's shop, could change wheel bearings, rotate tires, etc...never really understood how a combustion chamber worked or what the hell a 2 stroke vs. a 4 stroke was. So the guy brings the quad over to my mom's house (dad not present) and he proceeds to start it up and it smokes like the local mosquito fog truck. I said wow, is it suppose to do that, he said, "don't you know anything about motors? This here is a two stroke (Yes, he really said "This Here")". So I said "oh, ok". About a week later I take the bike to my dad's shop to start working on it and fire it up. Dad starts laughing and says holy crap this thing is fried and I say no way, its a two stroke. It was about a week later and we had the motor pulled and a new piston installed...my dad interjecting...this here is a two stroke throughout the whole process. After that, I made it my life's mission to understand as much as I could about any bike made. And by the way, it took about 1K worth of green to make that engine right again. Burnt rings, broken bolts (helicoil), bad cam, new cam chain and new valves and springs. What an expensive lesson for me!

I thought the point of this thread was to ask if it's possible that the "japs" just threw a a bunch of bolts together to assemble an engine
