Just picked up a Carl Heald Super Tryke

I just picked up a new (to me) Carl Heald Super Tryke.
I am sure some of you guys saw this on ebay.
I picked it up yesterday in Sackets Harbor, NY.
Was a loooong day of driving, but made it up there and back in one day.
The dude that sold it to me let me start it up and drive it around before I loaded it up.
This baby flies. It has a 14 hp Briggs & Stratton horizontal shaft opposed twin with electric start.
The thing fired right up and hauled ass. It has a brand new torque converter and a new battery too.
All the electrics work..... hell, everything works.
And for some reason, the guy even knocked $50 off the price once I got there.
When this thing idles it sounds like a small block Chevy.
I don't know why everyone else passed this thing up, I'm just glad they did.
Its fun as hell to ride. But that GREEN has GOT TO GO!

The guy even had a video of it running posted on youtube:

I've seen one of these that had a disc brake setup instead of band brakes on the axles.
I'd like to put hydraulic discs on this one as well. Anyone know where to get a brake setup that would work on this thing?
Can anyone tell me how much of this thing is stock and what, if anything has been modified?
Anyone know what color it was when stock?
I'm sure it wasn't this lime green.
And how am I going to get the paint off this engine...... soda blasting, paint stripper, pressure washing?
Does anyone make reproduction Super Tryke stickers, or does anyone have a good pic of the sticker so I can have one made?

That's pretty neat. Don't know much about these...were they a production run bike...I am assuming late 70's - early 80's?

They were sold as owner assembled kits.
I believe they advertised them as having everything but the nuts and bolts in the kit.
This one was built in 1980.

Pretty cool stuff. I would take it back to original, like the picture. Looks like somebody added some of their own "goodies" to it over the years. Still though, that's a real cool piece of history you have there! Keep us posted on whatever you do to it.

dude that is awesome! For the paint I would just give it a light sand with 200 grit sandpaper. wipe it down with mineral spirits or any sort of degreaser and then paint. Just remember to rather give lots of light coats than heavy.

Painting the frame isnt the problem. The engine was painted too. The cases, the cylinders, between all those fins, and some of it is flaking off. It's all oily, and I'd rather not paint over paint thats flaking off. I need to get all the paint off this engine without disassembling it. I'd like to either leave it as raw aluminum or paint it black.
