Best way to remove Cylinder Stud from ATC200S?

I have a messed up cylinder stud on my 200s, and I'm pretty sure the jug and head wont seat correctly if I only use 3 studs.
What is the best way to change that out? Does it just back out (threads on each end)?

I looked though the service manual, but nothing on changing those out.

I found it on BikeBandit for like 7 bucks. I'll also have to get a cap nut for it too.

This trike is really old, should I go ahead and get the head serviced? If so, anyone know of a good machine shop around the Beaumont TX area?

    Thanks,

    Justin

Yes it does have to be replaced.

Pull the jug and get as ow as you close to the base of the stud as possible with a REAL good pair of vice grips or it will twist as you try removing it. You may have to heat up the aluminum....

What does the engine need? Don't open up a huge can of worms unless it's beat and your ready for a 500-1K job.

I agree with dirtcrasher, but you might have to use 2 sets of vice grips to get the stud to turn I have removed quite a few this way. I have never had to use heat yet though.

Gentlemen!! The proper tool for the job. It gets a bite on the unthreaded portion of the stud. The harder you turn it the more it bites the stud. You can also use it to tighten the studs back down when you replace them :

You may be able to find cheaper used ones on fleabay, I just did a quick search.

I played the double nut/vise grips game for years and finally broke down and bought one. It has payed for itself many times over I still throw a little heat to it if they are being stubborn. It doesn't hurt anything and can help break the dissimilar metals corrosion bond if there is any. I also always use a little Kroil and let them soak a few hours.

Otherwise take it to your local motor shop and they can remove it for a small fee. If you lived by me Monk I'd do it for nothin.

The engine runs good, I was just wondering if I should get the head resurfaced while I have it off, so the gaskets seat a little better.
I bought the trike for 75 bucks a while back and finally have time to do some work on it. When I got it, only 3 of the 4 cylinder studs
were used, I have the motor off right now and can't really remember, but I believe the end of the stud was twisted off, because it doesn't
    poke through the valve cover.

Or should I do like the previous owner and over torque the other three down? The reason I took it apart again was because I had done a
top end job and only torqued the 3 bolts @ 22 ft. lbs. and when I was running it, it was leaking a tiny bit of oil. So I tore it down to fix it, but then
decided to do some cosmetic work lol.

I'd like to replace that bolt though, that way it's just... complete, you know? But if it's going to cause more headache, then bleh.

i would reccommend repacing that stud. just because you are always going to leak oil if you do not replace it and end up stripping the others by overtightening. like he said a small fee to have it removed then get her back on the road like a brand new machine.

Replace the stud or you will always have head gasket issues. Blown head gaskets, oil leaks, bad compression, etc, are all problems you can have if you don't replace the stud. Do it once and do it right the first time.

Take the head to a shop and have it checked for warpage, just to be safe. Don't over-torque the head bolts to try to seal a bad gasket.

Nope, the stud still sticks out of the case just as tall as the other ones, it's like the previous owner stripped the hell out of the threads (valve cover end) and just sniped it off or something, I don't know.

Should I take the jug in for a warpage test too? It looks like they only service the top side of the head and the top side of the jug (in the shop manual).
