I have an old 1980 honda atc185. It hasn't been rode in a long time.I rebuilt the carb.And it runs good except I never adjusted the pilot screw what is it supposed to be set at.The bike is really hard to start sometimes and it idles too low i and when its idiling real low like it does and i give it gas it backfires and dies

There are two external screws. The idle screw raises the throttle slide, and is adjusted for desired idle speed. The air screw or pilot air screw is adjusted in 1/4 turn increments (both directions) until you can blip the throttle and get best response off of idle. Usually around 1 1/2 turns is a good place to start, but exact starting point is not crucial as ending up where it works best.

i have always wanted to ask about that.
my book says 1-3/4 turns from closed. i have every upgrade without going into the engine.
if i turn the screw more open from where im at im letting IN more air?
so if i need to compensate for my upgrades should i let in more?
