i have a 1986 honda 250 sx and the other day it started making a bad click and banging noise in the rear end im sure what it is but the gear oil look like mud and is really thick would this the gears being sheered off

The only way to know for sure is to take off the diff cover and look...not too hard of a thing to do.

and it is very important to keep the gear oil good in the 250SX's more so on the 85 but still on 86

Sounds like the differential bearings failed and is or did cause the gears to go bad. If you need another differential let me know.
