    225dx gear shift problems

A search didn't turn up too much specifics, but I was curious if someone could help me locate the problem with my '84 YTM 225dx. It sometimes seems to have a hard time shifting. Most times I can go full throttle through all 5 gears, others, I have to try 3-4 times to get above 2nd gear. The biggest problem is while in or shifting into 4th gear. It typically will go into 4th and then pop out into neutral, 5th, or in worst case 3rd and sounds like its gonna blow at whatever horrible rpm it would be at.

I've read that it may be the shifter shaft, but didn't tell me what to look for. I have no problem tearing the thing apart, im a decent mechanic, but I would like to know what to look for...

Last weekend at Sand Lake, Im the one not paying attention to the camera. Didnt win any races, but I gave em a run for their money...

sounds like the shift forks and shift drum to me. Not 100% sure though. I would definitely look futher into this. Maybe some net research will show similar problems. good luck!

You can't really know what to expect until you open it up. When looking at shift forks pay close attention to the shafts they run on. Roll them on flat glass to check if they are straight. If they aren't perfect they are junk. Check for worn shaft bearings and damaged gears. Make sure all the springs are tight and in place as well. Most other problems should be pretty obvious to the naked eye.
