Just thought I'd mention that there are a lot of pilot jet sizes between not running quite right and belching out black smoke. Me thinks you have something outright wrong with either the carb or timing (cam or ignition) Wrong float heigh, or bad needle valve might do this too.
And the winner is 'El Camexican'..seems that ignition timing was a bit out. I didn't initially look there since it didn't appear that those screws had ever been touched..what do they say about the word 'assume'???
Well I check and reset the hall timing..it was off 3-4'. This seems to have it..a bit of a run perhaps this weekend to confirm!!
