Changing Head light on Yamaha YTM 200E

    Hello!
I recently purchased my first trike. A Yamaha YTM 200E. I want to throw some Hella 500 headlights on it. I doubt I could run them both at the same time but having a backup headlight to switch to is fine by me.

    1. Does the YTM have enough juice to power a hella 500? (hella 500 Specs to be seen in photo I provided)
    2. Will I damage the electrics if I try to do it?

    Thanks guys!

I'm not to eager to burn out the alternator or whatever is is called on trikes. 45 watt is close to 55 watt. But that still may damage somthing? If I had to bet the stock bulb is 45 watts during hi or low beam output. But thats me guessing. Hopfully someone can correct me.

I think hi beam is 55 or 65 but i would just run it to the battery play it safe if any thing just drain the battery. Here is the manual http://www.oscarmayer.net/atc/manuals/

Interesting. I was planning on running it to the battery and useing a relay just to be on the safe side. But the Alternator could still burn out trying to charge a battery that is getting drained by the lights no? Once the battery is dead then the alternator will try to charge the battery and run the lights and be under an even worse load. But it sounds like this is all a non-issue if the high beam is as high as 55watt. Which I still don't have 100% proof of yet.

i'm not sure myself on the ytm, but my honda 125m hi/lo are both 45w. personally i'd stick an inline fuse in there to play it safe.

    85 HONDA 125M (undergoing surgery)
85 YAMAHA YT60 red w/yellow trim (sold, still in the family)

I'm electronically challenged, but I recall being told that most charging systems make way more energy than is required (stock) to power everything and the excess is then removed by means of the regulator. The power output of your alternator/stator/magneto whatever you have (I bet I'm showing my stupid here) should be listed in your manual. If it exceeds the needs of your new headlight by a fair bit you should be fine, especially if your stock headlight used a similar amount of juice. A relay and a fuse are both good ideas, the closer to the battery the better and I'm GUESSING the fuse before the relay and a gauge of wire no less that whatever that headlight comes with, or even one thicker (smaller numerically).
