just rebuilt the carb on my 82 185s because it would not idle no matter what adjustments were made, back fired like crazy, and it ran on full choke. bought standard/common rebuilt kit (factory-spec) and replaced everything. the carb is a keihin and the jet sizes are 38 and 100. needle on side, 2 turns out from all the way in. front needle, 1.5 turns from all the way in. top needle(from throttle cable) cliped in 2nd notch from top, and spun that adjustment little over half way out for idle and then had to tweek it out another half turn. this thing purrs like a kitten! found out my throttle cable is stretching when i make a right hand turn and speeds up a bit as if you gave it gas, just rerouted the throttle cable and no more problems. i did have gas pouring out the carb when i hooked tank back up, all i did was hit the throttle and it stopped. must not have been seated correctly. also i never had a front needle in it untill i rebuilt it. all this time the full choke operation, back firing, and lack of idle becase of no needle. don't know if this will help you but that was my experience, and those are the adjustments i made thanks to 3ww and those were the jet #'s stamped on the parts. good luck jeigsk.

Sounds like your stator is out. I have had the same problem with several 200's and 185's. It will run, but craps out at higher revs.
