Little help needed on a 250es honda

Ok i have a big red and i just tore it down cause it wouldn't shift right and IT DID RUN, i tore it all a part only to find that it was a tiny little metal piece on the shift arm to replace. Now i put it all back in and now i aint gettin spark?? No clue why but i NEED SOME HELP tring to get it goin for winter any ideas. I get headlights low and hi and also i get my neutral and reverse lights up front. But no spark none natta.

Hey, welcome. If you've managed to strip the gearbox and build it up without stripped threads or leaky gaskets you've done alot better with that engine than I did, though the electrics can be heartbreaking at times. Firstly, check the obvious- kill switch on. If your getting the neutral light and headlights then the battery is earthed good and connected right. Id check the connectors you obviously had to disconnect to remove the engine, shine the copper real nice. My guess is if it worked before it should work again, but you could use a meter to measure the voltage to the coil from the dynamo...... you'll have to ask someone else for info on that. Lastly, check the plug cap is well screw into the HT lead... Maybe im stating the obvious here but hey, good luck!

250es only start when in neutral right? so maybe the switch that tells the electrics its in neutral has not been put back in properly, or something along those lines, if it worked before there`s a good chance its something you did putting it back together. i`m only guessing here but i think you`ll probably have to look back inside again hope you get it sorted.

Hey, dont wanna contradict you wolfie :oops: but if the neutral light and reverse light is coming on, would that not indicate that the incase switch is working correctly?? This could be checked by whether the starter is turning or not. The starter only turns if it has been detected that the bike is in neutral. But then the bike should spark in any from a kick- am I right?? If it didn't, everytime you put the bike in gear it would die. I still think it is a bad dynamo/coil/plug connection. Maybe you're right wolfie, sorry!

just trying to be logical, but i think you`re probably right about the starter,neutral light and spark.

Good to hear from some guys who have experience i've been told its either my stator or points but ive changed my starter coil which would be the points right? As for the stator i wanna make sure its not somethin else those are too darn expensive. I've been back to front, front to back with a ohm meter and find nothing and everything wrong. The spark plug boot comes out wrong and so does the exciter coil (i think thats it) but yes it does crank just no spark and i have made sure it the plug boot is screwed in far enough. Question if u wire a new coil in wrong will it still send power to the starter but not spark and what creates the spark its the box next to the battery right? Any who no one will look at it for me because some of the wiring isn't factory but it ran before. And i didnt touch any of the wiring all though u guys oughta see my mess of ground wires u'd love it . But other than that i cant get my way around the wiring with a diagram. Also if it isnt timed right would it make it not spark at all. I am a learning car mechanic but not small engine anybody in ohio that can take a look im able to make a trip if i have too.

Sounds like the same old crossed wire we all seem to do!! The 250SX also has the same wacked out stuff - double check all the color codes on the wires especially the ones you touched. I think it happened to me when I put a Black wire where a Black wire with a tiny white stripe was supposed to go.

Let me start by saying this, My 85 250es Bigred runs damn good. The problem I'm having is - I just put a new battery in the thing so I could just sit on my butt and push that little "Start" button and play the easy way.

But since I put this battery in I have had nothing but problems. I don't get a "Neutral" light when I turn the key, and the starter won't turn over.

The "Neutral" light does come on when I kick start the trike.

Could it just be a blown fuse somewhere (I checked all but the main fuse)

Any help is welcomed.. Yes I ordered a service manual for this thing.

Let me stress this to you - you have a simple stupid problem. I have done this to my SX at least one time - you kick it and nuetral comes on - SAME THING has happened to me!!!! Seems wacked, it is a wire not connected or mis connected or a bad ground I 1 hundred percent guarantee you!!!!!

Well I went out there yesturday and checked the wiring with my multimeter. Yes I know what your talking about with that stupid funny looking flat 20 amp fuse.. What was Honda thinking? I replaced it and kept checking. There was a blown fuse in the main wiring box up front.

Seems like I might have found the culprit, I got all the way back to the main fuse (round 25amp) thats located just before the battery box on the left side (shift) of the trike and checked it with my meter. I got a good reading when I checked the one side of it, but nothing when I checked the other side of it. Could this have gone bad? What does it cost to replace it?

And could you email me a copy of that electrical schematic? I can't really read the one one the board.

Sic and tired of getting odd reading with an ohm meter so its gonna be off to a tech school w/ it to see if she'll run. Cant beat a 3 dollar shop fee and parts if needed but with no hourly rate it'll be a little easy on the wallet. Thanks for all the posts i'll keep u all up to speed
