200x question. Help please!!!!

I just bought this thing last night and it looked like a real good deal BUT,

Just had a scare . Went and rode around in this field by my house and two times I was in sixth gear and squeezed the clutch in and tried to downshift and I coudn't shift. Instead of the shifter moving down and downshifting it was like it wouldn't move(as if it was in first and you were trying to push the shifter down [that feeling]). WTH could that be? Clutch adjustment??? Man i'll be pissed if this guy burned me I really don't feel like pulling this motor apart already.

it could be eather bent shift fork or the return spring broke not letting it move

also dose the shifter have play in it dose it feel slopy more info would help and year of the bike

It is a 1986 200x. No excessive play in shifter. It seems to shift up fine, and usually down but twice it got stuck in 6th. Like the shifter wouldn't go down to shift, like it was bottomed out.
