Transferrable parts from 200M engine to 200E engine

    Hi All

I have a 1983 Big Red 200E that apparently has an engine knock. I say apparently as I haven't heard it run, but purchased it from a friend for $120. I have a Honda 200M engine that is waiting to be used.

Question 1: Can I use parts from inside the 200M to possibly rebuild the 200E engine?

Question 2: Would it be better to just swap the 200E engine out directly for the 200M engine?

The original engine on the Big Red has high/low range plus reverse, so obviously if I can rebuild the old engine with the 200M parts, it would be a better end result for usage.

    Thanks!

A lot of different things to think about here:
If you have a 83 200e ( chain drive ) and it has reverse you have a add on kit for the reverse ( fairly rare ).
If you have a 83 200e ( chain drive ) then the 200m motor should bolt right in.

If the hi/Lo/Reverse is factory then you have a shaft drive ( 84 model only ). The 84 200ES Big Red was the only Honda 200cc model with reverse and shaft drive. These were only made 1 year.

Either way If the knock is in the rod, piston or vavles:
The complete top end will swap over and I'm 80% sure the crank will swap over as well. Those items should take care of most knocks ( provided the donor motor is good ). The tranny gears will be a little different ( at least some will be ).

Thanks Howdy. The big red is a chain drive with high-low. I may be wrong about the reverse feature, the guy said it had, but wasn't 100% sure. Once I have it apart, i'll re-post details.

Here are some pics of the Big Red and also the donor engine. I was surprised to find both the starter and the hi/low box on the donor engine!

Just swap motors because they are the same. 200m's didn't have hi/lo. You just saved yourself a LOT of work and money!!
