Stock bore is 81 mm. I've got a 12:1 piston in one of mine, and it really isn't any harder to physically kick it over (as long as your decompression cable is adjusted right). It is a pain, however, to start when it is hot. It just doesn't like to start. You do need to run high octane fuel also. I got away with premium pump gas (93), but mine is a bit tired, and probably not up to full compression. It also will run hotter, so if it is a hot summer day, and you are riding hard, you might not want to sit there with the machine idling for a long time.
For what it's worth, I think 10.25:1 is a great way to go. More compression and power from stock, without the potential problems of the 12:1.
