Honda ATCR80 2 stroke trike build!

Alright guys. I've been wanting to build a custom trike and you guys might have seen my other feeler threads. but this is for real, and its happening. I waited until I got some progress done and knew it would all work (for the most part) to get this thread up. Its a 1990 Honda CR 80R 2 stroke dirt bike, with a 1st gen 200x front end including triples, and a 1st gen 200x swingarm, axle, hubs, ect. I bet your wondering, what did I have to do to get this all to fit? Well, it was very simple

Front end: The triple tree front end setup off the 200X bolts tight in the CR 80 head tube on the frame, the rake looks good and the only problem I ran into is I need to cut the fork stopper off the CR 80 frame as it hits the stock 200x one on the bottom triple clamp. other than that, its all bolt on n go!

Swingarm: for the swingarm, I had to cut the pivot bolt tube on the right hand side flush with the actual swingarm, about 1/2 inch of material removed. this allows the swingarm to be mounted (with a space on the other side) and the sprockets to line up perfectly. I am awaiting bearings and bushings for the swingarm.

Shock: I'll have to mess with linkages from the 200x and from the CR 80 and see if I can get something working, but it sits nice and level with it direct mounted, However I don't know if the rear suspension would perform well like that. We will see in the future!

    Now,

Thanks! If it does get completely built and functional, I'll tear it down and paint everything and add some performance stuff. But, so far, its lookin like it'll work out. Tomorrows to do list includes chopping off the old steering stopper and welding in new ones, and cutting the swingarm to allow the CR 80 motor to mount in it. Then, I need to order bearings and dust caps for the swingarm. I also want to play with some linkages and see if I can get a nice combo of ride height, travel, and spring rate to make it handle decent. If I can get the whole thing set up as a ready roller, then onto the motor and plastics! I was thinking of using 200x rear fenders and seat, a 250R front fender, and a number plate. All that with the stock CR 80 gas tank.

If anyone has any questions about the build I'd be happy to answer them.

Glad you mentioned that cause I forgot theres no adjuster in the carrier. Probably just a chain roller piviting on an l bracket, with a spring for tension. it'll just ride the chain and keep tension like that.

Looking at what you're working with...you may want to try and use a 3rd gen 250r tank and start from there. I'm sure you'll have to modify the subframe to fit any kind of rear fenders, and when you do you can make sure they line up well with the tank. I love the idea of an atc 80....great job so far!

I think it's a great idea but how can you measure or judge the rake without the rearend set up yet?

I had it set up the way I liked it without the shock bolted on earlier in the day. I need to make a linkage system for it.

Thanks! The main idea is to use as much of what I have and spend as little money as possible, until its done. and if I like it, Then I'll worry more about cosmetics. Theres a strange spot in the very rear of the sub frame where it kicks up, and I'm going to straighten that and 200x fenders look good on it like that. I have a spare set I've been playing with.

Thanks! I hope your son likes his trike. I'm only 17, 5 foot 4, and this thing fits me pretty well!

I got some more pics, of plastics set on and of where I had to cut the steering stopper off the CR 80 frame

Post it up man! Very cool. I really didn't know there were so many 80 conversions going on either. We should have a group ride when everyones done. I figured I'll run 20's on the rear, with the stock rear tires on the CR 80 being about the same total width I figured I'd gear it down a bit for some torque and it'll be good. What size sprockets are you running front and back? what size tires?

If you can find a Tri Z neck and front end! haha. I was gonna run the stock CR 80 seat and tank and cut slits in the 200x fenders to run the CR 80 seat mount tabs through.
