    '85 250R CDI vs. '86 250R CDI ?

I'm curious to know why the '86 CDI is alot larger than the '85 CDI. Also, does the '86 CDI allow a few 100 more RPM or are they the same? -
(I thought I've heard that before-probably wrong).- Anyway, is the '86 better in any way? Does it have a secondary backup circuit or something?- There should be some explanation for the difference in size when everything else is really the same (yr. vs yr.). It must have been redesigned for a reason is what I'm saying- I Don't think the '85 is more faulty than the '86 right?? (I know about the plug being different). Does anyone know? Sorry, if its a dumb question.

I would have to look at the wiring diagrams for both but i think they are basically the same and have the rev limiter in them at the same RPM, etc.

No they ain't the same, and they do not have different RPM limits..
The 85 has a single round connector and the 86 runs a 2 plug connector that will swap with all the TRX's 250R's..Also be careful of what you buy..The 350X will plug into the 86 and up 250R harness's but wont run right. The only benefit of the 86 and up is there is alot more out ther if you need a replacement,

Ya for some reason Honda engineers decided to split off the two wires for the engine kill circuit. The larger CDI body was to accomodate the additional plug.

Hey Mosh, by any chance would you be able to post a side by side pic of the 2? I know my R is an '85, but it sounds like I have the CDI you describe as being the '86. Sounds like at some point my R may have been swapped over to an '86 harness..

Yep i just looked at the manuals to confirm, the 86 switched to the new style dual connector type. Other than that, they are basically the same internally however.

Well, I definitely have an '86 harness in my '85 then... Or at least parts of it. My CDI is the dual connector type. One plug has (I believe) 4 wires and the other plug has 2. Definitely 2 seperate plugs though....

Most likely someone did that to get it running again when the older style CDI, thats harder to find, died on it.
