    85 tri z jetting questions

    Hey everyone just had a few questions on jetting right now my bike is completely but I just got a k&n air filter and next week I am getting a full dg pipe and I would like to have the jets in the Carb and ready to go before I get the exhaust

    Buy the next two sizes up on your main an go from there considering the carb is stock an motor stock, adjust air screw according to manual!

    I have an 85 TRI Z, stock engine with a DG pipe and UNI filter. I think the 85's came with a 370 main jet from the factory...it seemed very rich to me. I left the jetting alone with the addition of the pipe and it still seems a bit on the rich side, but better. I think I could run a 350 or 360 in the summer and still be fine.

    The stock main on an 85 is a 470. They are factory, very rich. Depending on what you are using for a fuel mix, you should end up somewhere between a 400-450. Neither the DG pipe nor the KN filter will change your jetting requirements significantly.

    All my stockish Z's I have ever run, ran perfect on stock jetting for the 85 model with aftermarket filters and various aftermarket pipes. Most times you can bolt on the mods and ride it with no rejetting needed, assuming you have the 85 carb. 86 carbs were different and jetted leaner from the factory..Somewhere down around the 360 range on the main if I recall correctly, was stock jetting on the 86.

    You must be running a 86 carb if you are in the 300's on the main.

    Nah....its a 470, I haven't had it apart in a while and forgot the exact number, thank you for the correction...

    Thanks for all the info guys I will try running it with the stock jets and if I have any problems I will bump it up also if anyone is interested I have an OEM exhaust for sale has a dent in the bottom of the expansion chamber

    You must be running a 86 carb if you are in the 300's on the main.

    Both years used the same base carb, and more significant than the smaller main jet was the change in needle and needle jet for the 86 which made the smaller main necessary. It was tapered much different as they were shooting for a more linear powerband delivery like the R, instead of the "light switch" powerband from the 85 setup. You have to change the all three components - main, needle, needle jet to change your 85 into an 86 setup. Personally, I favor the 85 setup.
