1983 YTM 200K Wont start when engines warm??

My 1983 ytm 200k will start first pull when its been sitting for a day or so. It high idles a bit long but eventually idles down very slowly. Once I shut it off it will not start back up. The next day first pull starts right up...I put a new plug and cleaned the carb. Im hoping its a carb or maybe valves need adjusting or something. I only paid 50$ for it. Any ideas would be helpful..Thanks

Sounds like your valves might be too tight. If so, once the parts heat and expand they won't seat and there is no compression. You can try opening up the lash, but if its been ridden like this for a while you may have done some damage. Check the lash (cold engine) and report back. Do you still have the decompression cable hooked up?

Does any one have pictures of where to check the valves. Yes the decompression cable is still hooked up. The pull cord is hard to pull sometimes rips out of your hand if you dont give it a fast pull....

I ran into this issue with my 225, but on that it was a flooding issue and if I pulled the airbox drain it would pour gas, have you checked to see if you have this issue ?

Get a good manual, there is no better way to learn. Also check/adjust the cam chain tension when you set the valves (With valves a little loose is always better than too tight!). As far as the decompression lever goes, if it is set right it only opens the exhaust valve open for the first 10 inches or so of the pull. After that the moon, or half gear in the pull start assembly slips off the starter gear and full compression returns, so yea, if you pull a few inches of the rope out before you pull hard it can seem like the decompression lever is not working. My concern was that someone may have done something that was causing it to hold the valve open, but it sounds like that is not an issue.

I'll double check this after I start it and shut it off..

I just checked my airbox and there is some gas in there from the other day when i started it..What causes this a sticky choke ?? My choke cable seems loose and is taped were it goes into the carb...

Best figure that out. A hot engine won't start with the choke on.

Actually the main cause of a flooding issue is either a bad float height and float needle, or a bad o-ring that seals the float seat, mine was the o-ring. once that was fixed everything has been dandy since.

^^^^^^ if his choke is stuck open that will most certainly cause this machine to flood out. as will a worn needle. sounds to me like this $50 rig could use a good through service.

I adjusted the choke down a bit looked like it wasnt going all the way down in the carb. I'll drive it around a few laps around the house whenever this rain stops. If not i'll try a carb kit..
