What's the deal with honda ohtsu tires?

Honda recently discontinued the OEM OHTSU 701 rear tires for the 1986-87 ATC200X and the ATC350X this past Sept. I was thinking well Honda is just stepping up to Discontinue the remaining ATC parts . I was looking into a similar replacement tire and the 2008 TRX300EX OHTSU 702 tires looked similar to the 701's but they are discontinued. The 300EX is only 4 years old and the rear tires are already discoed? Even the 2009 TRX300X OHTSU rear tires are not available. What is up with that? I thought Honda kept parts available for their models for 10 years or atleast the parts that wear especially the tires. Can someone shed some light on this? Maybe it has something to do with a contract with the tire manufacturers and the tires are just temporarily unavailable.

I heard that they won't sell the Ohtsu tire in the United States anymore, but you can still get them here in Canada for double the price. When I called my Honda dealer, they are $125 per tire plus our wonderful sales tax.

I have contacted many Honda dealers here in the U.S. and no one has the rears for the 350X . Who can I contact in Canada? I have visited some Canadian dealer sites and they are not showing availability.

Thanks for the info Tapper, I called a Honda shop in Canada and the tires are on Backorder till the 2nd week of Nov . The dealer is not sure what is going on with the 350X rear tire in the states beacause they are not available here in the U.S.. but they are definately on B/O in Canada. Wonder why they stop selling in the states? Then again they were on B/O with a ETA of sept 7th this past sept here but now show Discontinued.

I am really suprised there has not been many responces to this thread, maybe there really is not much intrest and prob why the tire has been discontinued here in the U.S. On the other hand the tires sell on eBay easily ,even when they were available they were selling for double the price . Most people thought they were already discontinued but in fact they were available from Honda for the past 2 years. They were on backorder back in early 2010 then Honda had ordered a certain amount of tires from the manufacturer and I looks like it took 2 years to sell what they had stocked. Maybe they were a slow seller and that's why they were discoed but IMO they are very sought after. You can sell these tires every day on eBay at the original sale price , I think everyone beleives most parts are not available and it is just more convenient to order from eBay. The question now is why they are on Backorder in Canada? It maybe that if not enough tires are ordered ahead of time from dealers during the B/O then they go discontinued and this may be the last chance. Anybody have a real answer for this?

I bought my last set in Canada, after the US discontinued them. I found a place as close to the border as I could. When it was all said and done (purchase price, HST, and bridge tolls) this set cost me about $250. When I ordered, the dealership indicated that there were only two sets available. I bought one, so supposedly, there was only one left. I couldn't justify buying two sets given how much money I'd have to sink into them, plus the fact that we weren't sure if they were coming back to the US or not.

It will be interesting to see if they show back up in Canada (after being backordered), but I'm betting not.

I guess I bought the second set, lol. When I picked them up at my Honda dealer yesterday, I had a little chat with them. They said that they were going to do some research to see if they still can get them (they are still on back order until Nov.). They also said that they have an e-bay account and will ship to the United States. I guess they don't have to add our sales tax to the tires as long as you are not a Canadian resident, but the shipping will probably make up for that, lol. If anybody is interested in a set of oem's, I'll keep on checking with them to see what they find out, just let me know.

I just got a email from a Honda dealer in Canada, they said the 200X 350X Ohtsu 701's are still available there but are on Backorder until the middle of November. The price will be $113.72 per tire, this is nutz, now I might be wronge but I think they will be available again here in the U.S. in November also. Back in early 2010 the tires were not available but were back in stock again later that year, guess we will see next month,I'm keeping my toes crossed on this one though. One thing I do know for sure when a part shows Discontinued or not available ,on rare occasions they bring the part back , i have seen this before with the 85-86 ATC250R fenders back in 2003 I think. A honda rep once told me once a part goes Discontinued it would only be made again if it was for a new model year or if the demand was high enough which is prob why they still made the rear tires for the 350X in 2010. They discontinued the rear tires for the 2009 300X which was also for the 300EX models because the tire was a slow seller, that is what Honda is saying anyway.

Here in the U.S. I was buying them for $50 each with free shipping, I really hope they come available again.

I just got another response from the dealer in Canada, the OHTSU rear tires for the 350X are still on backorder and he has a ETA date now showing nov 22nd. I guess it's because they are just not selling these OHtSU branded tires in the U.S. for now, which might explain why just recently the 1983-85 200X, 85-87 250SX/TRX200SX, 86 ATC250R, 86-87 TRX250R OHTSU's are not available either, REAR tires for ALL these models were available at the first of the year,weird, maybe this has something to do with a trade agreement with japan or some type of contract?
