well, I caved... I picked up an 84 200es...
pretty solid runner i think...
I was hoping to find an 85 or newer but Ive got time...
couple little things need attended to...

the front brake assembly outside of the wheel hub (the arm and a new cable is in the trunk)
is missing...
also need the lever and saddle... not sure what happened there but who knows...

I think the machine had a speedometer as there is a bulb connector hanging up front
there.... ill have to find out about that...

and the trunk cover of the rear rack is gone... hmmmm...

seems like a good runner though... no smoke and starts easy...
im told the starter clicks and doesnt spin sometimes (I havent seen it yet)
I suppose they can be rebuilt easily enough,,, ,ya think??

i think it will be a nice pal to the 83 185s

any suggestions?

You can find the brake parts easy enough off ebay.. The bulb connector hanging you sure its not from the neutral or reverse indicators? Is it a bayonet type bulb or the type that you push in and turn? The indicator bulbs are the tiny bayonet style.

The part of the rack that goes over the trunk is missing on everyone i have seen, mine was too, not sure why but they always seem to be missing!

As for the starter, it could be the starter relay, weak battery, or it could be badly worn brushes in the starter. You can get a complete rebuild kit off ebay for about $30, or a new starter for about $50. I put a rebuild kit into mine, it came with the brushes and the entire plate with the holders, the bushings, etc. Was a twenty minute job on the workbench to rebuild it.

Hmmm my 84 200es is missing the center rack part over the tool box as well lol. The 200es is a great solid machine, but the 250 is a beter pick for general trail riding. One thing that is really good about the 200es is the hi and low range. They can do so much more than you would expect!

The Hi/Lo range is awesome on the 84... She is a real stump puller in first gear low. I have pulled around some pretty heavy stuff with it, trailers and even a car once with a tow strap, no kidding!

Was going leaf cleanup today with it...

I used mine to pull a pine tree lol. That is how my rear rack got bent... yes I abused the machine a bit, but it got the job done . Couldn't keep the front tire down, but if you add weight in the front, you can pull just about anything if you can get traction.

i still havent seen the front brake hardware though.... in fact im not sure what should even be there.... I think the arm in the trunk is not the correct one either.... is there a plate bolted to the front fork that the cable somehow attaches too as well?

if someone had a detailed picture of the external front brake hardware I sure would appreciate seeing it

If I remember right, there is a pin that sticks though the side of the inner part of the drum that the lever attaches to. Oppsite side of the same part has a solid pin, and the brake shoes go over them and are held on via the 2 springs at each end. Just a tip, don't buy the super cheap ebay brakes, I did that on my 200es and they only lasted about a month of riding. EBC seems to be much better quality, atleast for my 250sx, only thing it does now is squeek a little.

thanks for the tips.... but maybe I was not clear enough... Im missing the EXTERNAL parts from the shaft to the cable
The shaft sticking out of the brake drum is there and the cable is there... nothing else like the arm, spring, adjuster nut, and isnt there some kind of mounting plate on the inside of the front fork???

I beleive the front brakes are close to the same setup as the rear, just the top of the adjuster bolt isn't a wingnut style, just a normal hex (i think).

arm -> adjuster nut -> spring -> cable -> brake lever

This is all from the top of my head. A service manual would help more and have a photo reference.
