    My 2nd 350x Build (this time a 1986)

Well the story goes, bought my 1st 3 wheeler, '85 200x 2 years ago , then got an '85 350x last summer, Click image for larger version.

Unfortunately, earlier this summer sold the 200x , to get 2 of my 3 boys dirt bikes. Then this summer when riding with them, rode somebodys crf250r, I just had to get one of those, Click image for larger version.

Well 2 months later, I had seller's remorse. Really missed my 350x. Nothing is like riding that in the woods and just around to have fun.

So last week, bought an '86 350x Click image for larger version.

1st weekend (last weekend) tore it all down to the frame, Click image for larger version.

ID:	157330 cleaned it, painted it, bearings were all replaced. During the week, took the engine to machinist to extract exhuast studs and replace with new. Ordered a few parts. Tank sealant kit from Eastwood, decomp cable, New Old oem red fender from moshman. Had a few laying around since last build.
Sprayed the inside of the rear maier fender red. Jus to see how it would come out. Will eventually replace with all red.

Today, I rebuilt front shocks, carburator, put everything back together, except for engine, should pick that back up middle of week

Video of first fire up once all put ack together
    Phttp://m.youtube.com/watch?v=S_g0KxVy5qo

Let's see if this works. Fired up the x tonight for the first time. Took quite a few kicks to get her going. Once she did, she sounded real good. supertrapp is amazing.
Need to fine tune little bit tomorrow.

Question though, I did adjust valves, when engine was out. All needed minor adjustment. Was able to freely move the ..003 gauge thru and 3 out of the four Valves . I was actually able to move the .004 gauge thru them. So I adjusted to where the .003. Just grabbed a little then tightened everything down . I assumed I did the valve adjustment correctly? Then reinstalled the decomp cable when engine was on trike.

Let me know what you think, thx

When you re-set the valves, did you pull the little plugs on the stator cover, turn the motor over with a 17mm socket, and allign the "T" mark to top dead center? You need to be sure the piston is at TDC before adjusting them, otherwise you could be adjusting them while one valve is slightly open on intake or exhaust stroke. I would think if you did it incorrectly the top end would be very noisy, but it would also make it harder to start. Be sure to do a plug chop before riding her too hard. I just put a DG pipe on mine, rebuilt the top end with high comp piston, and took it for a ride. It is running lean on mid range (Needle Jet circuit) and also on top end (main jet). I havent gotten to a shop yet to pick up a couple sizes larger main jet, but after that I plan to raise the needle clip one position in hopes to take care of the midrange lean condition. Let me know what you find! Looks really nice! ---- Jon

Yes I did have at tdc. Both rockers were moving freely,
Went by the service manual that I have. I was kind of concerned b/c when I first bought it fired after 1-2 kicks. But once I tore all down and put back together after cleaning rebuilding it took a little longer.

Haven't rode it yet, just ran at idle to work out some kinks. I didnt hear any valve tap tonight. Engine hummed pretty good, but of course was really listening at supertrapp. Bike was running 5 disks when picked up, but I called supertrapp, and they told me to start at 8 and work down.....
I'll post again after I put the tank on thurs or Friday

Quick update, took it out today riding. After some carb tuning, adjusted valves, this thing is awesome.

No ticks, no funny noises, and even better, no smoke..

Got it to start on 1-2 kicks now. Dialed in decomp cable, running stock slow jet, main went from 138 up to a 145. Air screw 1-1/2 turns out.
Supertrapp muffler with 7 disks, uni-filter, and can only assume stock engine....

Of course will have to do all over again once my 400ex carb arrives. Should be here early part of week.
Tomorrow I'll post pics, plan to go out in the woods and get her muddy?

Parts still needed, in search for:
    Prm swing arm skid plate
    Oem red rear fender
    Tank decals
    350x seat cover

    Quick update,
Got the 400 ex carb yesterday, went thru it, cleaned it replaced old parts, and installed little bit ago.
Had to start all over with tuning
Kept the 42 slow jet in it. Had to go up to a 165 main. And I still have a little pop at decel. Plug is good, but will prob go out and pick up couple more jets to see where it will go, thinking 170/175?

The poping on decel would most likely be your pilot jet that needs to be a few sizes bigger.

Before you replace the pilot jet, try adjusting the fuel screw on the bottom of carb. You need to go out with it to make it richer. Try 1/2 turn at a time, ride it, let off the throttle and see if it pops. If it does, go another 1/2 turn, and eventually it will go away. If you have to go more than 1 1/2 turns out, that means you need a larger pilot jet. I got mine to stop popping on decel, but I ended up going too far out, so I need a larger pilot jet. Good luck!

Today, I thought I'd try making some of my own wider foot pegs. Had some 1/4" aluminum stock and shaped into some wider pegs. Mounted and installed.

Went riding day after Thanksgiving. Good day, had the new 400ex carb installed, fun.
Ended up jetting, 45 slow, 165 main, 3rd position on needle. Installed new rebuild kit in it last week.
