    Mike Coe's 83r race parts

    Hi,

    Looking for some advise on what kind of parts guys like Mike Coe used on there 83r race bikes before I start searching

    some old pictures will say ALOT. what you cant see in the pictures will probably be outlined in magazine articles. both Coe and Sundahl had factory honda and DG sponsorships. DG would have done the cylinder porting, they would have had DG heads and boost bottles, DG pipes and silencers. the wheels were mitchell racing wheels annodized gold, the axles were most likely durablue. braided steel brake lines. seats were stock fenders were low profile, DG swingarm for sundahl, probably coe too, but i think i read somewhere that he preferred the stock swinger. i have more info on coe's 1st gen (81/82) bike than his 2nd gen

    I need to start locating parts, I really want to get my 82, 83 & 85 race reps done. Any help you can give me on finding some of the parts would be great. I have a set of Ohtsu 901's for my 83, that's it so far, oh and a set of gold rear rims!
    Any leads on a DG head and pipe, I know you can still buy them new but that wouldn't look right? Did you not say you had a head?
    As far as the swinger goes, I might just use a stock 84 swinger with an 83 linkage to lower the ride height, I want all my race reps in flat track set-up.
    Like I said I need to get these bikes done and so I need to start sourcing parts, I have pretty much everything I need for my 85r.

    I would go with a old school hand cone pipe over a stamped pipe like DG anyday. They are pretty hard to find for the 2nd gen, but look better, sound better, and perform better. A Bills or Bassani pipe would fit the description nicely. Swingarms are also hard to find for the second gen R. I would bite on any that you can find at a resonable price.
    I would like a hand coned pipe for my 2nd gen, but to no prevail yet. Right now I have a old school Cobra pipe, which is also not common. It is a stamped pipe like a DG. I hear the Cobra is a top end pipe. I also have the 85R front end on it, and mitchell wheels on the rear with hole shots. Also stashed away is a 300R cylinder and head, which needs a new sleeve. I have all white plastics for it, but the tank is still red, and dented. It is still in project form as of now, as I have been putting all my attention on my 350x as of late. Soon enough the R will be going, and Im positive it will kick the 350's arse. I like to see the old R's get built up. They have a lot of character, and are really great bikes. Besides that, everybody and their mom has a liquid R, except me I guess. Keep us updated on the progress!

    Some pics here for reference and/or entertainment. My knowledge is not very good with the first two gen Rs, so this all is merely suggestive. Very slowly scanning my magazine collection on cold days, so more articles will pop up I'm sure. It's a lot of work/time so I'll try to pass anything along as it comes up. Man, I know I've seen more 1st & 2nd gen stuff, but didn't scan all of it apparently. I'm into the liquid years (selfishly) and didn't take the time unless it really tripped my "trike porn" trigger. I remember an air cooled, aftermarket head shootout a while back. Maybe I'll come across it again. Patience is a must with period correct builds with really rare stuff. You know that already though... Happy hunting!

    Hi Andy,

    Thank you very much for taking the time to get all this info together for me, I really appreciate it! Going by what I have seen so far of Mike Coe's 83r in particular is that it's not massively modified and shouldn't be too hard to replicate although I imagine the low profile fenders will be near impossible to find!
    I think if I just try and keep it simple and refrain from trying to go down the water cooled route(camex or DG) then things will come together.
    I'm trying to get my 85r short track bike done too, I have all the parts for that though, just need to get it built. Once I have my 82, 83 and 85 race reps done I think I will just stick with OEM projects, it's much less stressful haha.

    I'll try and post some pics over the next week or two.

    To do them right Nick you have a lot of searching ahead!. I know you know that. I haven't been around for a while,but as long as you're sticking air cooled,that will help immensely! However,,,Sundahl ran very few races air cooled that era. Coe did more. If you need help with pics,I can help you out there. I have all the mags fairly handy.I was literally thinking of stashing them away the last couple days. LMK if you need a look at anything. All the advice above is accurate,,especially the turf tamer part!

    It would probably help you to find out what the rules were for that time. Mike Coes' brother was known to fab frames, so if Mike wasn't bound by the rules to run a stock frame, I'm sure his brother fabbed up something for him. That's why I say you have to check what the rules were for in 1983 in the district he was running in.
