200M idles great when cold, kills in 1st and when warm

Hey guys,

So when I first start my wheeler in the afternoon it starts up on either first pull or 2nd,3rd. I'm not worried about that, its normal. That's without choke. Now sometimes it'll bog in first when I first drive it but in 2nd all the way to 5th gear it runs great. Now when its all nice and warmed up and I try to drive in first gear real slow it kills. Almost like its not getting gas. I already fixed my other problem(petcock wasn't letting gas out that much, like little trickles here and there) but that's over with. So i know it's getting gas. Everything is spotless in the carb. Newer airfilter so that's not clogged.

Also could it have something to do with valves? I've never adjusted them and I doubt they ever have been touched. When I put my head next to the motor I hear a slight tick coming from them. My dad told me I should tighten them so maybe it has something to do with that?

Well for one adjust the valves, thats a good thing to check regardless of what problems your having...

As for the problem at hand, i would say not enough fuel, if your in first and you drop the will she rev up? Check the needle clip position and also your mixture screw. Pull the spark plug and see what color it is as an indicator of running too rich, too lean, etc.

Well If i keep it constantly revving in first she'll stay running it's the 2nd i let off the gas it just kills. I guess i'll wait for my rebuild kit. I'm using a mixture screw thats from my newer carb(i'm returning it) and it has a little bend in it. So once I get my new one i'll write back.

Oh yea =) we have snow haha, i'm taking my wheeler to my cousins to message around in his huge open field. I'm actually excited, i've tried to drive it in the snow for awile now but everytime it melts!

Sounds like you will be better off once you get the carb rebuilt.

Yep we got snow and more snow down here. Fired up early morning around 4am, we are up to about 10 inches now and its a total whiteout blizzard.

I've never had so much fun on a wheeler in my life lol. Those back tires were spinning me around so easily and I was constantly drifting every corner.. I've never rode in snow before.

I tossed the tire chains on and got my Big Red out to plow today.. Only problem i had was a frozen throttle, literally frozen, ice that is... Must have gotten some moisture down in it the last time i used it, it was kind of a rainy foggy day the last time i used it. Let it run for a while and she thawed out, then i had some fun. Of course after i pushed out the driveways i had to tear it up a bit.. LOL

Hahaha nope the dog didn't touch that wheeler! I scared her off lol. I've never had tire chains on but I love sliding sense I can still control it really well. So right now my machine is sitting with snow on it.. its in a garage but theres still snow caked on it. Will my machine get a bunch of rust? Should I clean the snow off everytime or just heck with it lol.

I just broom mine off and park it. If you got it in a garage and got a space heater you could just warm her up and melt it off each time, a lot of people do that, the only complaint i have about that is once you start melting you have to get it good and dry before you let it get cold again or else you end up with stuff frozen everywhere... So i say the heck with it and just clean it up a bit and leave it. If i had a heated garage/shop that i could leave it in overnight to dry out i would.

Ok so I got my rebuild kit. My float height is completely flat like is should with the new little rocket thing haha. My problem now is that it kills the second I let off the gas. I had to keep the choke on for about a minute until it warmed up then it was good to run without choke but it wouldn't stay idling AT all. What would you suggest first? Mixture screw turned in/out? or idle screw turned in/out? It should be getting plenty of gas. At first my petcock was leaking.. (i was riding in -2 weather lol) but i cleaned it out and tightened it more and its fine now.

raise your idle screw if it wont idle...your ansering your own questions best way to learn is to tinker with adjustments youll never learn by asking every time you hit a bump.

Hmm, if you cranked in the idle set, oh and a hint push on the throttle a bit to raise the slide before turning in the idle set screw otherwise you will dimple the slide and create a spot that will make it hang and stick on you, then the only thing i can think of is the low speed jet might be plugged or its the wrong size if you replaced it. Not all rebuild kits come with the correct size as i have found!

If it runs with the choke on that means it needs more fuel to idle, so it has to be the jet or mixture passageways. I would start with the jet, remove the jet and then clean every little hole on it and blow some air through the passage it screws into. And if you replaced it compare the size or put the original back in, they don't normally wear to the point that they need replacement.

Also make sure if you took the needle out of the slide that you put it back with the correct clip setting.

Well I know the jets are the same size I looked at them to make sure. I found out the machine was just cold blooded. Once its warmed up it will idle in neutral. It still kills in all gears if i let off the throttle. The needle is on the correct clip setting.

Sounds like it might be a little lean yet... But to tell for sure its time to monitor the spark plug. Toss in a brand new plug, ride it for a while getting it up to full temp and rip around a bit, driving around for a while will give the plug time to get good and hot and show whats going on. Then pull the plug and see what she looks like, should be a nice tan/brown color on the electrode. If its white or really light tan she is running lean, which i suspect is your problem. If its black your rich, but i doubt that your too rich.

They are cold blooded, especially at the temps we had this week. If its idling in neutral but killing when you shift into first then its not taking the load as its applied from the trans, probably needs a little more tweaking. The mixture screw you should turn in and lightly seat it, don't crank it tight, then back it out about 1.5-2 turns. If you have to turn it out farther than that you need a larger jet. I would check to see if the jets are stock size, never know who could have messed with it before.

In this cold weather i tend to richen it up a bit and set the idle a bit faster so she starts easier and runs smoother in the cold. Then spring comes around and it warms up and i tweak it the other way... LOL.. Thats just how it is having a carb and not fuel injection!
