Anybody ever put a XR50 motor in an ATC 70?

My neighbor bought an '83 ATC 70 today, and since he don't know much about working on things it's in my garage. He paid 50 bucks for it, non - running, but complete. After giving it a good once over I noticed it wasn't an ATC 70 motor, and after a a little investigating it's from a 2000-03 Honda XR50R bike, but still has the 70 Carb on it (maybe they are the same?? ).

Didn't get much time to work on it tonight, but since it's a bike motor it has a kick start on it, and because of the back tire and exhaust, the kicker will only go about half way, not to mention it is very very hard to get the motor turning.

With that said, is it worth the time and money to get this thing going for him, or should I just tell him it would be better to part it out and make some money back?

Put a set of axle spacers on it, and hinge the fender. That should take care of the kick starter problem.

Rotate the kick starter forward on the shaft, then you should be able to pull up on it by hand. Also you should be able to convert it to pull start if you have a 70 recoil and side cover

There are some pics of my 140cc 70 in my sig line. Out the fenders and made axle spacers.

Don't have any pictures of it yet, although it's definitely nothing to look at. I'll try rotating the kick starter forward a bit just to make it easier to kick (or pull) just to see if I can get it running, then axle spacers sound like a great idea. I'll try and get some pictures up tomorrow.

The xr50 motor stock was 3 hp... The stock 70 motor was 2.5hp... Make it work, and have fun...

OK so I got another question about this..... Was checking out a no spark issue and was kicking it over and noticed that when I kick it over, the shaft moves, but the piston doesn't move at all. I get nothing out of the exhaust when I kick it. Any ideas?

Sounds like your clutch plates are worn out , pretty common on those xr50 motors .
The clutch is just spinning thus the crank wont turn .

My 125cc pitbike motor in my 70 does not do anything w the clutch engaged. I had a bad cable and it was not releasing the clutch to let it kick.. make sure its in neutral and try it w/o clutch pulled in.. just some other thing to check
    Good luck!

I put a cub70 motor in. I used the kickstart pedal boss and welded a lever to it. The lever is about 18" long and enough to turn the engine easily. It rests on the footpeg out of the way. Not pretty but it works. If I can find a pic I'll attach it.

this thing has no clutch cable, but will shift through all the gears. When I try kicking it with it in gear, the rear tires will move. I'm thinking it's time to tell him he would be better off trying to part this out to make his 50 bucks back, the frame is tweaked too, right where the steering stem goes through.

Bent frame is super common on these... Its really not a big deal, and a pretty simple fix... For $50, there is NO WAY I would part it out! 70's are few and far between in these parts, and expensive too! My frame is bent, a little time with a bottle jack and frames good as new...
