    TRI Z cylinder

Hi ive got an 86 tri z and the piston is goosed its deformed on the exhaust side, It looks to have left deposits on the cylinder. Is the tri z cylinder coated with nikasil or something similar or will i just be able to hone it. Also how do i know if the last piston fitted was oversize? it has 25 stamped on it.
    Thanks in advance

The z cylinder is not plated. The 25 prolly means .25mm oversize.

You can go to wiseco's site or denniskirk.com At dk just shop for tri-z pistions and they should show all the sizes. On the z I think the next size will be .50 mm.

Have a shop measue your cyl. Then you will know if it needs to be bored. Usually they do need to be bored.

i personally have the clyinder bored. this way i only have to do it once. but thats just me. i never did a hone before so i dont know if its better. my yamaha warrior was low on compression and the machine shop said they could hone it. i had them bore it. this way i know everything is good. but do what you think is best

The only purpose in honing is when installing rings. This is to deglaze the clyinder where the rings will wear in right, otherwise they will not seal properly. Honing was never intended to be used as a way to go up to the next size bore. Honing that much you would never keep the bore straight or uniform.

Yeah, honing just fre up the cylinder, you can buy a honing attachment for a drill, but I would leave the cylinder boring to the professionals.

The best hones are the ball type hones. They work far better and do a more consistent job than the ones with the three fingers on springs like they sell at autojunk, etc. Btw, JW125M that's not very good advice to be giving people. You and your dad may have pulled off a honing to the next bore, if you had some sort of jig, such as a machine shop would, but for what it costs to have a cylinder bored, it is pretty stupid to buy a new piston, and then ruin it and another bore, because you cheaped out. A hone is not meant to make bores with, and there is no way that someone with a hand drill can go all the way up a piston size, without ovaling or egging out the bore.
