    YT175 Jugs- 82 vs 83

Hey guys, new member here and my first post after countless hours of reading. Really great site, with more info than I thought was available!

Im in the middle of putting together an 82ish (some 83 parts) YT175, which should be a very nice trike when done.

I've got two complete motors, an 82 and a 83. Im rebuilding the bottom end of the 82 (origional to trike) and was wondering which top end I should go with?

I read a 1983 article that a member posted here (I believe old-yellow) that stated the 83 top end had "better porting". Is this true, and is there that much of a difference in performance? The jugs look totally different and have different castings in the transfers and intake area.

Is there a favorable year jug for these motors or is it all an article hype?

Thanks for any info you guys can provide!

Welcome to the forum i have tried to look for what your talking about, the only thing that i can find that i have said is that the 1983 bottom end has a better clutch and shift pattern, so it was not me. As far as good porting you want to find yourself an IT175 or a DT175 cylinder there the best for performance.

Hey thanks old-yellow. I must have mistaken you for someone else, but I found the link...

You will have to right click each photo, save to "my pictures" then open with windows photo viewer because they are so small.

What I was refering to is on the first page.

I did some research on the IT/MX/DT 175 cylinders and my only concern is how the transfers at the base of the cylinders is much larger than the YT's. And Im not sure if this would cause any mating conflicts with the YT crankcase. Anyone have any info on this?

I can tell you that i used to have a 1980 DT175 top on mine and had no problems, as far as the other cylinders am not sure but there is a lot of people that have used the other cylinders on here and do not remember them saying they had any problems with just bolting them on.

Welp, good news, the jug I thought was an 82 YT175 is actually from a DT175. Ran the numbers (2A7) and its from a 78 model. I should have known being the jug is black (whats left of it) and the casting provision for the clutch cable. I ended up polishing and raising the exhaust port by 1.5mm and blending/smoothing the transfers. Should be a pretty healthy runner when done. Thanks for the help old-yellow!

I put a dt175 cylinder and head on my 125 tri moto, Dt's have higher compression, I still had the 125 carb on it and it did 60mph.
    current trikes:
    84 225dx with HID
    2 Speed tri Zinger
2 more tri zingers and 4 zinger

    I had:
    82 atc70
    80 tri moto yt125 with Dt175 topend
