Aaaaargh. Big Red/SX differential question.

I know about the differences between '85 and '86/'87 models. My question is, are the differentials themselves different? I have a trashed '86 diff and I'm trying to use an '85 diff. I cannot get the axle tube and the differential to mate snugly on my 1986 Big Red. The junk stocker slips right on, the '85 one has a 1/8" gap I cannot eliminate. So frustrated!

Thank you Howdy, that's exactly what I needed to see. I did a search earlier, but came up with nothing. Guess I'll be doing some machining with an angle grinder
