79 Honda twin star won't start help please

So this happens close to a year ago one day riding my Honda twin star with its new rear knobby on it and all assuden it just staring revving super high just like your giving it full throttle and then it would slowly just start dying and then it just died completely wouldn't start up again, before that it wasn't getting any spark so I bought a ignition coil and that solved the problem but now it's not getting any spark??? What would cause that since I already got a ignition coil ?? Could it be the celinoid or ?? I'm kinda of out of ideas. I would live to get it running by spring time becaude it was a blast to ride
Please any help would be awesome

Btw I cleaned the carb a couple times after this problem so it is not the carb

Sorry to hear you are having problems. You will probably get some teasing because you seem to be one short for this forum but we'll see. There is a motorcycle forum here and a twin star type forum elsewhere I can refer you to if you want but see what people say here first. Untill then I guess I could ask some questiins to get you started. People will need this info plus more to help but the first thing is to try and get some spark.

Your coil would be the first place to look it might have gone bad again so first you must be 100% positive your coil is good. Do you know how to ohm test it?

Is your new coil CHINESE or US?

The high rpm is typically a lean condition or stuck throttle, Did your slide stick even though your throttle was off?

How is the battery and CONNECTIONS?

Is it a 6 or 12 volt battery?

Does it still have lights and if so turn them to high beam, are they bright?

Turn the key ON and test for voltage at the positive side of the coil. It will be 6v if you have a 6 volt battery and 12 volts if you have a 12 volt battery. Let us know what it is.

Even if you have voltage at the coil turn the key ON then take a piece of wire and run it from the positive side of the battery to the positive side of the coil then check for spark with the plug laying on the head. This bypasses the stator and may eliminate it as a problem. Is there spark yet?

Immediately disconnect wire you will use it again in minute. If you leave it connected to the coil too long it could cause damage but this takes a while. DO NOT LET IT GROUND TO THE FRAME, YOU WILL BE VERY UNHAPPY.

If you have no spark you will need to remove your flywheel.

Remove the wire from the points [not the wire to the condenser] then check it for voltage with the key ON. If there is NO voltage then reinstall the jumper wire from battery to the coil. Is there voltage now? If so this is good.

Turn the key OFF then reconnect the wire from the battery to the plus side of the coil, is there voltage there now?

If you have no voltage in any of the conditions above then let me know. We need to get voltage at that wire before proceeding.

Look at the points are the contacts clean and flat/smooth? Either way just sand them lightly and brake cleaner them and dry them off.

Turn off key and disconnect battery then reconnect wire

Turn key on and reconnect battery to coil jumper wire and with the points CLOSED, see if there is voltage from the back side of one contact to the backside of another. If there is then kick it over and see if you have spark yet, if so disconnect battery and see if you have spark .

If you have spark with the coil hooked up to the battery but not when the battery jumper is disconnected then you have a dirty connection or bad ignition switch.

If you have power to the wire on the points but not across the contacts with them closed then disconnect your CONDENSER wire, does it work now? If so then see if you now have spark at the plug. If yes your condenser is bad if no then your points still may not be making a great connection and should be replaced with NON chinese ones and try again.

not too framiliar with that model but only few things it could be. it should be too old to have cdi so points might be bad. alot of thest older bikes need battery power to make spark. check all your fuses. i would try hooking jumpercables to battery and see what happens. do not do this with car engine running cause alternator voltage can be too much for motorcycle components. if you do not get spark then i would pull off points cover, set a volt meter to ohms and test points. should show resistance when points closed or a circuit (as if you touched leads together) and no circuit when points are open. if those check out i would just ohm check coil to be sure its not defective. if everything checks out problem is in your harness somewhere
