Honda ATC 110, no power when I give it gas?? low compression??

Just got a 1982 ATC 110, had been sitting for about 12-15 years. Cleaned tank, fuel lines, petcock, carburetor (all the necessary things to get it running). I got the carb tuned to the point where it's responsive at idle & idles o.k but when I put it in gear it moves VERY slowly until about half throttle (no sputter, backfire, or bogging, just starts moving really slowly.....same thing in any gear). I will also mention that it has really low compression & burns quite a bit of oil. So my question is: What is causing the extremely slow acceleration from a stop? Could it be because the compression is really low?

Check the clutch adjustment and make sure the front and rear wheels spin freely, could have a dragging/frozen brake as well or bad bearings, etc. If its running as good as you say then its likely more then just lack of power as i have ridden some around before rebuilding them that lacked compression and burnt oil like a chimney but they would still take off and move, but i bet your going to have to do a top end rebuild of course.

The piston rings may be stuck. To free them, you might try filling the cylinder with either Marvel Mystery Oil or diesel fuel. Allow this to drain past the piston rings into the crankcase then change the engine oil. With the sparkplug removed, turn over the crankshaft several times to ensure all incompressible liquid is removed from the cylinder.

Ya, I guess it is just lack of power, the wheels spin fine when I lift if up & when no one is on the seat. Time for a rebuild I guess.

Check your valve/tappet clearence, and your clutch's, i had one do something similar...ended up being it was overreved for so many years the valve spring on the intake side wore through the spring seat and almost into the guide seat, pretty much a top end, but just thought i would mention.

Also, get a timing light and a battery and check ignition timing!

I did a topend refresh on my '85 atc110 a couple years ago because it was acting just like yours. When I got the topend done the problem still persisted. Turned out to be ignition timing was way retarded. Got it advanced to the correct position and it runs like a new machine!

Thanks for the input. Just found another 110 for $100 (awesome deal) with an excellent strong running motor, so I've decided to make 1 good one out of the two. Anyone need parts? Selling the stuff I don't need.

That's probably a cheaper option then rebuilding the engine. I've been working on a 1985 ATC 110 since Christmas. It's nearly finished but I still need an exhaust header heat shield, tool box, plastic cover for handlebar (dashboard piece) and the trunk lid (but Howdy is going to re-pop these). My gas tank interior has been restored but the exterior has no Honda stickers. The little rubber doughnuts which sit over the frame posts (they interface with the rear fender mount hooks) are missing too. I also need a rubber cable tie for securing front brake control brake cable to the handlebar ( I retrofitted an ATC 125M front brake). PM me.

Is this easy to do? I need to try this on my 110 and 200. Ive read about it in the service manual but always felt like I could guess by trail and error until I felt like it was running strong, but maybe not.

    Not difficult at all..

Just get an inductive timing light, a battery out of a lawnmower or something like that. Without going out to the shed to look at my 110, I don;t remember if there was a timing plug I had to remove or not.. But I do remember 100% I was able to use the timing light just like an automotive engine. The ignition plate is slotted at the mount holes and to adjust timing just loosen the 2 screws and rotate the ignition plate the direction needed. Then you can fire it up and check the timing marks with the light in the little window. Easy as pie and well worth checking.....

I would bet money that the OP's issue of no power is due to the timing being off. Smoking or not, it should still be able to get up through the gears.....
