Deal of the Day!!!! Maybe of the Year...

Have to say I scored !BIG! today. Picked this up from a couple of guys who said that they haven't had it running for about a year and either the trans is bad or the shifter. Either way, I'd say it was a score. Best of all, I got it for $100. Yes, that's right $100. They wanted $200 but since I had to wait on them for 45minutes and they did not mention the bad trans/shifter originally, I got if for a STEAL!!!! Question is though, how easy is it to fix a trans?

I have never been inside the Trans of any ATV so I cant help you there but you definitely scored a killer deal! I have been around a lot of 250 Big Reds and owned one myself along with a 250sx and I have never seen one have tranny problems but obviously it's possible. That thing looks really good though no matter what you find wrong with the engine!

If the only thing with the trans is that the shift won't return then you're a bandit..

Get it running, pull the left engine side cover and see if the shift return spring pin is broken and replace it.

And you're right if that is the only thing wrong, it is the steal of the century!!

If its more serious then the motor is coming out and you have to split the case to start internal parts inspection.

Good luck and good score either way..

Start simple and just make sure the shift isn't stripped allowing it to spin on the shaft. Some people have a tendency to put to much weight on the shifter. Nice score!

Thats a great deal, good luck on getting it repaired. Ive bought several $100 hondas in the past 7 years but never had to tear into the engine to get it running. None of my 100 dollars hondas ever looked as nice as yours.

As the others said, that is a steal! I paid over $200 for my parts SX machine, non-running and the shift fork on the shift shaft was broken (not the internal trans forks). Easy fix, had the parts, and then I found out the kick starter 1 way bearing was bad.

So there are the 2 common problems with the big red/sx engines. More or less if the shifter is on the shaft good, then check how it returns. If it returns well with a solid shift then either nothing is wrong, or it is an internal issue, debug more .

If the shifter does not want to return at all, shifter spring pin is broke, I heard it is common, but never seen one bad. Heard the new pin is still in stock at honda.

If the shifter returns well, but has a lot of "slop" before it seems to do anything, I would say the shift fork is broken on the shaft. Easy fix, but requires both sides of the engine to be poped apart. The manual will help you line things up correctly, and the part is around $20-25.

Looks like you need a left side cover, I'm pretty sure I have one around if you are interested in making it OEM complete. Get a right fender and fix the engine problem and you should have a $1500-2500 machine depending how clean it really is (photos don't always tell the whole story).
