81-82 are same bike. 83-84 has same motor but many different other parts. front end on 81-82 is set up for wide tire (like on the rear). 83-84 uses smaller front. rear swingarm on 81-82 is different and has drum brakes. i have seen some with a disc brake conversion kit. the 83-84 swingarm has stock disc rear brakes. the exaust and axle are different between 81-82 and 83-84. thats all i can think of. any other questions just ask.

I see you live in Red Deer. I live in B.C. I think for us Canadians we have too spend the extra and rely on E-bay for our parts. I have just started on a 350X. I have made a list and I watch for things through E-bay. This project is going too take me awhile, between saving $ money and searching . I took out want adds in the classifieds locally but no luck. As for info and advise for your R, it is all on this site. The classifieds on this site seem like a excellent source, but I have never bought anything through it. I not sure if it is a pain in the arse for the seller and buyer if they live in different countries.

Your 82 will have a disc in the back, only 81's had drums. What do you want to do with it, there are parts out there just a little harder to find. I love the look of the first gen R's ( I have 3). You can go mild to wild. The first one I built had a 300 top end,+ 8 inch swinger, and a # of other mods. That one also had a 200x front end on it. I will not put the 200x front on any ever again. Changes the rake a little, no biggie. I really like the look of a first gen with the wide tire, they do slide a little more but you adjust to how they ride. 81-82 pipes are the same, 83-84 pipes fit if you run a pod filter on your carb. I would sugest some G-force hubs, or at least later factory hubs to widen the rear and run 4x110 rims. Seat pans are an issue with the 1st gen's since they are metal and now most are rusty. DC plastic's offer a new seat pan made of plastic, lighter and alot easier to put a new cover on. DG still offers pipes. Hope some of this helps. Post up a pic also, let us see what you have to work with.
Rebuilding and riding trikes everyday and lovin every minute.
