    Tri z Sprocket oil seal

    Hi Guys, are these things designed to spew a little to keep the chain wet or something? the collar goes through the seal but between the collar and the shaft the oil is going to get out. Maybe its because i use atf in there and its thinner any thoughts?

    Come on tri z guys, no one else have this problem? oil spewing from behind the sprocket? the collar is not worn, seal is new and seals good around the collar. not a ton of oil, probably a teaspoon in a hard hour of riding. Anyone?

    If it is a new seal,, try pullin the sprocket and flipin the collar.... no it is not supposed to leak... seal in backwards????

    It shouldnt be leaking any oil from there. There is a pretty good seal between the collar and the seal. The collar and shaft is a pretty tight tollerance and shouldnt have anything coming out. Could be out of round a little, but even then... I Have had pitted old nasty collars in old motors that didnt leak oil there.

    ATF might be the problem, but I dont think oil can pool up at the sprocket.. Its higher than the oil level. I would use something like belray gear saver oil. Or any 80 weight gear oil. I have never had any leak out of the sprocket shaft. I have had leaks from the shift shaft.. But never the sprocket. I dont think the oil level is high enough to really spew out at that point..

    Are you sure it isnt coming out of the shifter? Its right under the sprocket..

    i thought that it might be the shifter shaft but its caked all around the sprocket, and it does not drip out, just gets dirtier every time it is ridden. maybe the seal is backwards, ill check that and try to flip the collar. im thinking it is just the thin atf between the collar and shaft, i will get some heavier oil in there

    You need the STOCK nut and LOCK washer on an aftermarket sprocket..say JT for instance, that sprocket has to be TIGHT against the collar or it will leak...i ran into this myself using a Fancy nut on a steel sprocket, Renthal sprockets are a little thicker and will seal up with it. I also run ATF or what ever is on hand.. make sure the sprocket NUT has the Non thred LIP facing IN!

    I had the non threaded part facing out, im going to brake clean it all up real good and give it the smallest bit of rtv between the collar and sprocket, sprocket and nut, and the splines under the sprocket. and ill turn that nut around. ill let you know how i make out. glad to see someone had the same problem..

    Yes, as he said. Also make sure the washer splines are lined up with the shaft splines for the same reason. Pull on the shaft so the splines stick out enough to fit the washer, and carefully finger tighten the nut, until its butted up with the washer in place.

    cant believe i didnt notice that before. With the nut on backwards there is still a half a c**t hair of play. problem should be solved. Ill let you know forsure after a good rip.. Thanks a million
