There is a big hole in my muffler where the spark arrestor eith rotted off or was cut off. I always thought it was just a whole some prior owner cut to make the trike sound better. Now i realized there was once a spark arrestor there. Does this affect my performance?

I've had lots of 250ES/SX with holes in the muffler, at this age few are completely solid..though the theory of back-pressure being part of the engine tuning and all that.

I'm sure others will tell you differently, but to me it didn't make a noticeable difference to the amount of power those machines had..

Unless the noise is unbearable or you just want to replace it to make it 'right' then I wouldn't worry about it..ride on!!

I was just curious I was thinking about some sheet metal and a hose clamp but I didn't know if the artestor was an extra hole or not. I'm having trouble being a sneaky 3wheeler ninja with the holy muffler!

There are mufflers on Ebay both new (aftermarket) and used OEM. The SX mufflers work on the ES too.

Yeah that will work, but be better if you have a welder available..cut pieces and weld right onto the body of the muffler.

i've got a welder at work i can use i might even blast it down and paint it when im done! i just never gave it that much thought until i learned there was a spark arrestor that was supposed to be there!

When I had an SX the muffler had a huge hole, spent a few hours, cut nice pieces of steel to fit it perfectly, and welded it up nicely, turned out great, and kept the exhaust volume down a lot. Goodluck.

Here's a question.
Anyone done anything to make a quieter exhaust? Never really been a fan of loud pipes. Not running any mods or racing.
Some mbody out there has wanted to be a sneaky 3wheeler ninja like I do!

well fixing the hole wont help a whole lot without getting a replacement spark arrestor. it actually does add some back pressure to the exaust and there fore make it a bit quieter. does the bike currently run good? if it does not break up on high rpm the carb is tuned for the exaust being the way it is and if you fix all that you will be running too rich. and need to adjust carb.

well as of right now it runs fine at high rpm. the only running issues it has is idling after it warms up. it doesnt idle low or anything just idles kinda weak after it warms up does that make any sense. might be totally unrelated to exhaust just wanted to mention it.
so if i fix the hole with a total blockage, would setting the pilot air screw at or below factory settings probably solve me problem then?

that makes sense the engine has no back pressure right now at idle and is prolly lean at idle. it needs a step up on the idle jet. if it runs good on high end, some one has tuned main jet on carb. the pilot screw only adjusts fuel air mix at idle and can only vary the mix a little based off idle jet. when doing exaust and other modifications the idle jet needs to be stepped up or down as well as main jet

so to make exaust changes you want (fix hole and add arrestor) it should fix your idling problems, more back pressure, it will use less fuel at idle. and for that same reason you will more than likely be too rich on high end (main jet) and need to step it down a size.

actually i did remedy it by stepping up the idle screw. (i think its a cruel joke putting that right past the exhaust, that heat guard only does so much) It stopped the the weak idle and stalling for a time, but the idle i had to use to achieve that was such to cause it to jump slightly when going into gear. can you show me a photo of what the spark arrestor looks like, the diagrams i've found arent really detailed enough to fab off of.

If you are going to fix the muffler soon I suggest leaving jetting until it is fixed.

Your idle screw should be around 1-2 turns out. If it is set near these 2 positions and if it is around 60 deg air temp and it takes several pulls to start your bike with full choke and 0-1/4 throttle and it needs to warm up for more than 30 seconds before it will idle with choke off it is too lean on idle circuit and pilot jut should be increased by 1-2 sizes.

MUFFLER – In general the farther the exhaust travels through a muffler the quieter it will be but all the sound can never be totally eliminated obviously. To make yours quieter you need either a longer straight muffler or a muffler with an internal s shape or one similar to the twin internal pipe ones shown in the muffler url below. You might have to make this yourself. You can also weld a 45 deg downward facing tip on it.

In general a muffler with an internal pipe diameter at least equal to that of the exhaust pipe it is attached to will provide no more and no less back pressure than a straight pipe equaling the total length of the mufflers internal and entrance/exit pipes providing the exit hole in the muffler is at least the same size as the mufflers internal pipe size and not smaller as was the case with the pre-production and probably the first production year Kawasaki Mule.

Increasing a mufflers internal pipe size and corresponding exit hole size in relationship to that of the exhaust pipe it is attached to will provide less back pressure than a straight pipe equal to total length of the mufflers internal and entrance/exit pipes.

I'm sure it was never rejetted for a rusty muffler. Fix it and ride it, I don't think it's necessary to read a novel like some people like to post. I'd bet my left nut that it will run just fine after fixing the hole
